My daughter is 5 and has had her hamster for 3 years. He died today and she was upset crying for like half an hour. Now she's on this kick of we have to buy another hamster that looks just like the one that died.
Do you think it's a good idea to go right out and buy another one?

I think that this is a golden opportunity to teach the lesson that animals are valued and we don't just replace them like they don't have any value in their own right. That doesn't mean that a 5 year old should have to wait for a month but at least a week, would honor the place that the pet had in her life and drive home the idea that all life is precious.

No, definitely not right away. Put it off for a while and let her grieve.

Running out and replacing a pet that she loved for 3 years sends a signal that life can be easily replaced.

Getting another hamster is fine .... but slow it down a bit. After awhile, she may decide she doesn't even want to replace the one she's lost!

I think you should wait awhile. Other wise she will think you can replace anything when they die (people) Wait a while and see if she asks if she can have another one. Why not try another animal. Rabbit, mouse, hermit crab etc.

I think you should wait a while. It will help her understand death, and give her time to process the loss.
