My digital camera is slowly dying and becoming more and more of a hassle to use. I'm considering buying a new one, but I'm not sure exactly what models I should be looking at. I'm a high school student taking a photography class, but I use a basic, fully-manual film camera for assignments. I want to get a digital camera that has optional manual features (automatic but can be adjusted manually). I'd like a fairly good camera but I have a limited amount of money (let's say $300 at most, even though I don't have that much), and I've decided I can't afford an SLR. Also, I'd like the camera to have at least 7 or 8 mega pixels, but you can find that now in almost any basic point-and-shoot camera on the market today. Is all of this possible, or will I have to compromise in some way? Thanks for any help you all can give me!

Kodak sucks... Nearly everyone one I've ever shot with requires you to load their software to get the images from your camera to your computer without using a card reader.

I've shot with everything from Minolta - Nikon.
My Favs:
Canon
Nikon

Hated:
Olympus
Kodak

Because you're on a limited budget; look at Canon over Nikon. The last time I bought a camera, you got more for your money going that route.

Megapixels don't mean crap nowadays for the average person. Megapixels don't have anything to do with the picture quality. They only determine the size of the image. Unless you're going to be printing stuff larger than 8x10... 6 MP will be suffecient. Image quality is all about the quality of the optics (lens) and the image sensor.

Just go play with the floor models and determine what you feel comfortable with. Sticking with Canon or Nikon will assure that the image quality will be great and will last you as long as you want it to.

go for more optical zoom. Digital zoom is bougus. It just makes each original pixal larger in the memory. Your computer can do a better job at this than the camera.

I like AA batteries. If you run out of rechargables, you can find akalines anywhere.

I like an optical viewfinder. If you are someplace kinda dark, like a dinner party, you can see through the optical viewfinder when the ccd isn't sensitive enough until the flash lights the picture.

See if it has manual flash. Mine has auto and off, but no "on" for a fill flash, like when people are standing in the sun and their features are casting shadows on their face that are really dark in the picture without a fill flash.

When you narrow down your choices check Epinions.com and see what other people have said for your model. Model numbers change like the weather, so a really new model might not be reviewed yet

I'm not sure which other ones have full manual capabilities (A, S, & M) but I purchased my Samsung NV11 because (A) it looks cool, (B) has a unique and user friendly interface, and (C) offers full manual control. It also has a 5x zoom lens.

Alternatively some of the SLR like cameras from traditional brands (Nikon, Canon, Olympus) also offer full manual capabilities.
