720 p means 720 lines of resolution progressive, 1080 p means 1080 lines of resolution progressive, i means interlaced the difference between progressive and interlaced in simple terms is progressive shows the horizantal and vertical lines at the same time, while interlaced shows the vertical, then the horizantal lines, but never at the same time, but the new t.v.s or so good you typically cant see that, anyways, to answer your 2nd part of your question, you can not buy a t.v. based on resoulution!!!!!! there are many other factors, for example a pioneer elite 42'' plasma that is 720 p or 1080 i will destroy any other 42'' out there other than a runco. samsung, lg vizio, olivia, sony, mitsubishi, sharps, hitachi, panasonics just don't compare 1080p or not. the real question should be which t.v. is better plasma or lcd , the answer is plasma due to its superior motion video, as well as superior black levels, lcd's shouldn't even be on the market they are terrible and have very artificial looking colors, anyways happy t.v. shopping, and pleas do not buy on line or at a big chain, a local mom and pop shop will be able to better help you find the perfect t.v. for you

they have differnt lines of resolution 720p has 720 1080i has 1080 lines of res. the p in 720p means it is progressive scan which is much better than an interlaced scan in 1080i. In my opinion they are about the same, even though 1080i has more resultion the interlaced scan just will not look quite as good as the progressive scan. So both will give you similar video quality.

About 340
It's the number of lines in a High Def picture. P stands for progressive. That means each line is projected once in each frame of picture. 1080i means interlaced That means half the number of lines projected twice per frame, to put it simply
1080 p is better, but it is relativly new and most expensive. 1080i is more common with 720p
Can you really see the difference in 1080i and p? Probably not. Your source would have had to been recorded in 1080p to see it make a difference. Maybe in the future. I don't know how long, but change happens fast. They are already starting to come out with the second generation of HDMI cables
