Sherry is a type of wine, and with any wine, there are good and bad quality versions. Sherry is NOT just a cooking wine. In fact, there are many very fine Sherrys that can be sipped like other wines.
Buy your Sherry at a wine shop, not the stuff at the grocery store.
Sherry has a very distinctive flavor, but depending on your recipe, you can substitute almost any other liquid - another wine, broth, water, maybe even soy sauce, etc.
Sherry is especially amazing, I think, on mushrooms. I love to do a saute of wild mushrooms with garlic and Sherry ...
1 small onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 pound mushrooms
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon dry Sherry
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
Mince enough onion to measure 1/2 cup and roughly chop mushrooms. In a 9- to 10-inch heavy skillet cook onion in butter over moderate heat, stirring, until softened. Add garlic and saute just until garlic gives off strong scent. Add mushrooms, Sherry, nutmeg, and salt and pepper to taste and sauté over moderately high heat, stirring, until liquid mushrooms give off is evaporated. Cool mushroom mixture.
This is good on crostini or crackers, or works as a topping for risotto, too.

sherry is just a cooking wine! You can substitute any wine! I personally don't use any wine to cook with unless I would drink a glass of it myself, because that flavor goes thru the dish! So I don't use sherry! you may try a different wine! white or red! or you can buy sherry at any store

Sherry is in a category of wines called fortified wine. These wines have added alcohol, therefore having a higher alcohol content than other wines. You can use any wine you wish in its place, just know that the taste will not be the same.

Sherry is wine. Depending on your recipe, you may be able to get by with either water or broth. You buy sherry wherever you buy wine.
