Atheists, for the most part, honestly believe that they have proven themselves intelligent enough to 'figure out' that there is no God.
And keep in mind, it does take some courage to hold that position in a society that encourages belief in a deity.
So they feel that not only were they smart enough to figure out that there was no God, but they also believe themselves courageous for making that proclamation.
The qualm I have with their view has nothing to do with their claims of courage, for I feel it does take courage to go against those that would have them conform - no, where I disagree with them is their statement that 'there is no God'. For that, they cannot know for certain. That belief, I'm afraid, requires faith.
Much like their Christian counterparts...

I know some truly stupid Athiests AND Christians.
Most of the time, the people that post stupid and offensive questions are just either bored, or really need some counselling. And I'm not saying that as an insult.
Seriously the amount of time they must have thought of to post something like "Do you think Jesus will have a cape when he comes back!" just to look funny is really sad.
Even if it took just a few seconds.
Why everyone has to say something negative about anyone who doesn't believe like they do, is sad, in a mental, wow, you are a loser, type of way.
Also, its kindof funny, in a sad way, how athiests hate how we Christians shove our beliefs down their throat, yet theyre doing the exact same thing by spamming the site with stupid and crappy questions saying that God isn't real and that its all a fairy tale, and then if anyone disagrees or points out theyre Christian, THAT PERSON gets attacked, and, (instead of being told theyre destined for hell,) get told theyre stupid and that following God will get you no where, and that everything you have been raised to do means youre uneducated, and that your parents are morons for teaching you their relgion. (btw, following God has actually brought me everywhere I need to be in my life, so hummph.)

not all atheists are smarter but factual statistics show on large this is true so what some might just be stated as matter of fact is arrogance for others . the higher the stature in the scientific community the higher the percentage of disbelief due to the discrepancies of facts more than likely . I don't care for arrogance either expecially when it has no sense of tolerance or consideration for opposing views but this is a trait that spans the gamet of beliefs systems .

The atheist is a fool. A fool is a weak minded or idiotic person.
The fool has said in his heart,
“There is no God.”
They are corrupt,
They have done abominable works,
There is none who does good. Ps. 14:1
Professing to be wise, they became fools. Rom. 1:22
Newton, Galelio, Einstein were all brilliant minds who believed in a creator...not just any creator, but the God of the Bible! They've made very significant contributions to to science that are still foundations for ideas today.
Atheists only want to take several steps backward and say we came from monkeys, soup, or big bang. That leaves only a survival of the fittest mentality and no final judgment for one's actions. We've all seen the effects of Nazism...that's exactly where atheism is going.

Some of the most intelligent people I know are Christians and Jews as well as atheists.
Y! Answers is not the real world and is not an accurate reflection of anything -- especially in R&S.
You need to get out more and actually meet face to face many people.
You are correct when you write "I don't think being smart has anything to do with knowing or believing in God".
I also know some very stupid people and I do mean STUPID who are Christians, Jews and atheists.

AAAA.. you have stumbled across the TRUTH of atheism. Atheists MUST hate and insult Christianity (in particular), and consider those who believe to be idiots and jerks... WHY? Because if they allow even the SLIGHTEST modicum of VALIDITY, that opens the door to lending Christianity CREDENCE!! OH HORRORS!!!! If Christianity is in ANY way VALID that would mean that they would have to RETHINK their rejection of God! "Hey, this Christian might just have something here... but then, that means that God may just REALLY EXIST!!! If God REALLY EXISTS... then... " and so on. They are SCARED of where that line of thinking may just end up at!
So, when you see atheists behaving so arrogantly, just take it as a COMPLIMENT!!!! It means that you KNOW something they are AFRAID to know!
Have a blessed day.

It is not being Atheist or No, there are some people with certain personalities having this complex of thinking they're superior to others and know more than others. It is all in the human nature, so sickness. And sometimes being arrogant is the right thing to do, because people think of you weak and subtle if you become modest and silent.

Because it is human nature to take shortcuts in our thinking.
The arrogant responses you see are usually directed toward a loaded question by a believer.
But back to your question- I've never met an atheist who was not of above average intelligence, never met one who had not deeply pondered the existence of gods before concluding there are none .
So yes, intelligence does seem to be a component.
Do you mean Wyclef Jean? Who cares what he believes? Maybe he hasn't given much thought to beliefs, and being from Haiti, he'd better believe or else. C.S. Lewis was a deeply troubled man and a very over rated writer. Never heard Tolkien was a believer.
True brilliance? That's more in the area of Einstein, Steven Weinberg and _______, my late father.

Those guys you mentioned are from different centuries and had not the informational advantages that we have today.
Their cultures also expected them to adhere to certain beliefs.
As well as that they never applied LogicReason to the god delusion.
The simple test is: Why aren't the prayers of all the abused and starving children in Africa answered?
Why do so many children have to die?
Is your Invisible Sky Critter so much of a sadist?
AND, if god made everything ... who made god?
Do I think I'm smart because I'm an atheist?
Hell no! I'm an atheist cos I'm so damned smart.
A universe WITH a god would be completely different to one without. (RD)

I question whether the writers you use as examples prove you believe in God. Do you seek their god? I don't think they proved his existence either. Just my opinion. Who's making it about brains?
Mark 9:19 "O unbelieving generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me."
20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.
21 Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?"
"From childhood," he answered. 22 "It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us."
23 "'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes." ~(from New International Version)
