I see there are a lot of older questions that address the life, process of becoming, jobs, etc. of a Naval Officer, but I wanted some fresh input.

I am graduating with a BS in Political Science and International Affairs (3.3 GPA) in May and have been thinking about trying to become an Officer in the Navy. I'm particularly interested in intelligence and public affairs. I'm talking to a recruiter soon, but I wanted to know if anyone could give me some pros and cons from personal experience about being an Officer. How competitive is my field of interest?

If anyone is willing to to share some wisdom it'd be much appreciated! Thanks.

First, be sure you are talking with an Officer Recruiter, not an Enlisted Recruiter.

Second, jobs in intel and public affairs are very, VERY competitive.

The vast majority of jobs are in Unrestricted Line (Surface Warfare Officers) and Restricted Line (Supply and Engineering).

they take about 50 PAOs a year. maybe 150 Intell and 150 IWO across the board from ALL commissioning sources. IP is not open to initial accessions.

your degree is a decent one, but your GPA is borderline. they suggest a 3.5 or better to be competitive. depending on what else you can bring to the table, however, it may not be too much of an issue.
