the reason for people taking the Lord's name in vain is simply because they don't expect retribution from God. Sadly though, they are mistaken, God is giving mankind a chance to repent before He closes his extended hand of mercy on humanity. Just like in the days of noah, people poked fun at noah, mocked him, spoke evil of him, until the day that noah entered the ark, and the bible say's that God shut the door. There's coming a day, when God once again will shut the door to his heart on an unbeliving world, and then His wrath will be poured out without measure. It matters not whether people choose to believe or not, whatsoever He has promised that He will do, wait for it, it will come, perhaps at a time when humanity thinks that life will continue as it always has. Funny how they already forgot the flood.

Cursing using God's name is for lack of better words. All cursing is like this. Perhaps using God's name(s) is a way of expressing independence from His ways, over and above "normal" cursing. It's ingrained into our culture, especially in the U.S. and Canada, and it's seen as normal. There is less reverence for God's name now than there used to be even thirty years ago.
We obviously don't use Mohamed in place of Jesus because until recently the majority of people in the west didn't know very much about Islam. In addition, Islam puts a higher value on the name of God and the prophet Mohamed than we do in America on God and Jesus.
I prefer to use regular, English/American words rather than curse. It sounds more professional and I try to respect God's name and His word. I don't always succeed, but I try.

First you have to understand what it means to use something in vain. Webster defines VAIN as : excessively proud of or concerned about ones own appearance, qualities, achievements, etc.; conceited: for example when the pharisees prayed loud in the temple - they were praying in vain. to curse using Gods name is not a good thing but it's not using Gods name in vain either.

It doesn't roll off the tongue as easily.
But seriously - the western world has had very little influence by Eastern religions in the past, because the majority of settlers were Christian. Blame them.
Those words just seem to have caught on, like it or not.
(not to mention the Ignorant Americans who probably don't even know who Muhammad is).
Another question for you - same God. Why don't people say Yahweh damn??
I blame ignorance for not taking all religious Gods names in vain!! (a joke, I'm not trying to offend).
BTW - it's MUHAMMAD not with an O with a U.

Using God's name in vain is calling yourself a believer without trusting the belief.
Without revelation you are forever stuck in doubt and a possible threat to His truth. Those are the "religious" people using their beliefs to make other people doubt God, denying the "one true" God outside of their churches. Some how I don't think God (of the entire universe) would agree with that blasphemy.

I'd say Alla damn it but it makes me sound kinda Tex-Mex. Depends on how you think of the use. Normally in a fit of disgust where something doesn't work, I cuss the failure not blaming God, but telling Him that He damn the failure since He's more capable to damn it properly than I could. Thus His name is not used in vain.

Because most of the people in this part of the world aren't fully associated with Mohammad and don't even think twice about him...ever. I think your question answers itself really.
Also, not everyone believes in god, i for one don't. And i say Goddamnit all the time. It means absolutely nothing to me. Just another one of those things engraved in culture.

The taking of God the Father name in vain, was done by Satan. Satan deceived the whole world by making Moses believe he was God the Father, by making the whole world think he was LORD God. He took and used their names, to deceive the whole world into thinking Satan was them. But we called them all God.

Because people take God and Jesus for granted. They are benevolent and all loving and people just stomp all over that.
