Australia if you want beach night clubs and hot weather. New Zealand south island if you want mild weather beautiful lush green bush and country side with blue blue water, lakes rivers and sea.Take the plane to Wellington, ferry down to Picton then hire car through Nelson visiting Abel tasman National park then down the West coast you will see seals penguins and blow holes through to Franz Joseph and Fox Glacier on to Wanaka and Queenstown . Make the most of the extreme sports, ie bungy jumping jet boats. helicopter trips . The girl will be much happier with you if you take her choice. and take the 2nd choice next time. If you are flying from distant shore you could get a couple of days stopover in Sydney or Brisbane. Either one you choose you will love it.

Beautiful scenery in both countries but January is milder in New Zealand. If you don't mind the heat there are a lot of choices in Australia but Jennifer H has given you some good advice. Still if you're thinking of PNG then you obviously have no objection to hot weather.
