When you find out what breed that is I recommend adopting one at a shelter, because you'll be saving a life, and money too. Here is a good site to find a dog or puppy thats up for adoption in your area http://www.petfinder.com/ Just put the name of the breed, and your zip code

I too have owned GSDs or mix of my entire adult hood. Grew up with terriers. Shepherds are quick learners and their loyalty is unbelievable. I bought a purebred for $75.00, but without papers. They are an over-bred breed so be wary of the breeder you purchase from. There are many at shelters, even purebreds of all ages available, my little girl is from a shelter although she is mixed. She learned very quickly, I taught her a command a week, all with positive training, more like playing. Try not use a harsh method, especially if they are under 6 mos., they don't usually respond well and may cause some fear aggression. I think the most important thing is to make sure you have enough time to exercise and socialize them. They can be destructive and become aggressive if you don't teach them from the get go. If left to their own, that's when they become expensive, they can remove walls, couches, floors, leap fences, possible become nasty and bite someone or other animals. Be patient through the "teen" period, at about 2 yrs the reward will pay off, they know what you want from them or will have taught you what they want of you. For a dog their size, I don't think they eat alot, mine have even turned down food, not like a lab. They would rather chase a ball than eat!! I can't imagine life without one, I do like other breeds but a german shepherd is unbeatable. One thing they're pretty steady shedders. You will be telling someone that asks this question the same thing after you've befriended yours. Good luck

Goldens have the best personalities. They are highly adaptable to many different situation and not only have coats of gold but hearts of gold as well. They are very energetic and charismatic as well as extremely smart and highly trainable. I'm not sure but I think labs are similar but all of my research has been focusing on Goldens. I'll be picking up my Golden Puppy in less than 4 days and am so excited. Good Luck with your decision ;)

both breeds are VERY similar, and both are great dogs. I would reccomend looking for lab AND golden pups and youngsters on www.petfinder.com then, pick the pup you fall in love with. Remember of course that goldens can have slightly higher grooming needs than labs, but for the most part, they are both great dogs. Seriously, there are TONS of homeless labs and goldens, puppies included! on petfinder.com, go have a look and safe a life :) -Neb

i have two black labs and also a lab/rat terrier mix. all three of my dogs are very loving and sociable, but also protective. make sure if you decide to get a lab that you are aware of their size. i wouldn't recommend a lab puppy to anyone with small children, because even though they have an awesome temperament, they love to jump on you, and you do NOT want an 80 pound dog jumping on a 3 year old child. however, if you are looking for amazing companionship and loyalty for and adult, i would definintely say labs are the way to go!! they are very smart and easy to train and of course they LOVE LOVE LOVE to fetch!!

You should adopt a dog!

Check out www.petfinder.com. PLENTY of homeless labs and goldens, two of the most commonly surrendered dog breeds.

I have a Golden Retriever and I love her to death! She is sweet and loves my three daughters! Yeah, at first she did her biz in the house and dug holes in the yard, but now she is great and LOVABLE AS EVER! They are adorable, too. BONUS!!! and you don't have to worry about them drowning or any thing because they are water dogs and love to swim.

Whatever you do, adopt one from a shelter, pound, rescue group or petfinder.com!! "Dont buy while shelter dogs die!" Also, never buy from a pet store. Those puppies come from puppy mills. Look online if you dont know what puppy mills are because they are too heartbreaking to describe. Please adopt a homeless animal and have fun with your new dog!
