OKay im having a christmas party and its a big crowd for dinner
i'm going to have food sort of....spread out..where you serve yourself and you can just eat wherever you want since over 30 people is near impossible to sit at one table in my house.
i want to 'call' the dinner something on my invitations but im not sure what it's called.
Cocktail dinner party?
is that going to be weird for people too-like...sitting some in the kitchen area, some dining room, patio, family room? i dont want it to be awkward. any ideas or input would be really great.

Are you planning for them to eat a meal all at once? If so, the meal should occur within about half-hour of the time you invite them for, and they might expect to leave 2 hours after the announced start time. And you could call it a buffet supper or buffet dinner, even if it's eaten standing up or sitting in the patio. Or call it "Christmas cheer" "drinks & dinner" or anything. The key is that if you invite people with a start and finish time that encompasses the dinner hour, they know you're planning to feed them.
At a cocktail party, people don't expect to get a whole meal. The party has stated hours (5 to 9, 6 until) and you keep the food fresh knowing it's not their evening meal. But if the party is 5 to 7, that's suppertime and people have needs.

Just make sure you have enough places for people to sit down. Maybe you could borrow some card tables and chairs. It doesn't matter if the people are spread out all over! Have all of the food on the kitchen counters and let the people help themselves. Keep the food warm in crockpots. Have a good time!

I would call it a cocktail party on the invitation and note under it "Food provided" this lets people know there will be munchies and they can eat while they mingle so they will come hungry.

Its a cocktail party!!! :). You can call it a "Christmas get together", or you can call it a "social gathering"/"social event". Just make note that there wil be food provided. Sounds like fun! Enjoy!
