I think it's an expression along the lines of "cor blimey!" or "sweet baby jesus!" or "holy cow!" Yeah.. i'm sure you get the idea...

(1) The term originated as a greeting by Chief Thunderdud to the Peanut Gallery on the 50's TV show, "The Howdy Doody Show."
(2) An exclamation of rejoice from the early 1990's, brought to popularity by Teenage Mutant Turtles.
(3) It means good, great, positive
(4) It's just a word yelled out, kind of like "woo hoo."
(5) It means rock & roll
(6) When a person is smoking pot, they say "wow...I'm high...cowabunga.

you are almost correct Cowabunga is a slang word from the 1960's movies (which there were several ) I guess they would be called tinney bopper movies. the word means "SURF'S UP".
