HIMSELF
HE's the only foundation
and the chief cornerstone of it
and it was Peters recieving the Truth which was revealed by the Spirit of God that Truth being Jesus is God
and no if Catholics would read Hebrews they will see there is but ONE PREIST and thats JESUS
Catholics are just wanting an excuse to do whatever they want to justify thier own desires..........

Martin Luther even challenged the nature of this passage. I prefer to use context than excerpts so look below. As you can see from the passage, Jesus is first asking the Apostles who others say He is. Then Jesus asks who do the Apostles say that He is. Peter answers that He is the Son of God. Then Jesus first responds by telling Peter where his revelation came from. Next Jesus speaks through the passage of controversy. In the passage Peter, refers to Peter, the small rock, and the rock, petra is the large rock referring back to the statement of verse 16. Then the declaration of silence in verse 20 can really make sense in the passage. Great insight to ask such a question.

That the apostles did not understand Jesus’ statement to signify that Peter was the rock-mass is evident from the fact that they later disputed about who seemed to be the greatest among them. (Mr 9:33-35; Lu 22:24-26) There would have been no basis for such disputing had Peter been given the primacy as the rock-mass on which the congregation was to be built. The Scriptures clearly show that as foundation stones, all the apostles are equal. All of them, including Peter, rest upon Christ Jesus as the foundation cornerstone. (Eph 2:19-22; Re 21:2, 9-14) Peter himself identified the rock-mass (pe′tra) on which the congregation is built as being Christ Jesus. (1Pe 2:4-8) Similarly, the apostle Paul wrote: “For they [the Israelites] used to drink from the spiritual rock-mass that followed them, and that rock-mass meant the Christ.” (1Co 10:4)

I know it as Jesus saying that Peter would be the head of the church (small c). The body of Christ is much larger than the Catholic Church, which reached back in time to "create" Peter as the first "Pope."

I thought Petros was what Jesus said to Peter, the 'man' rock, not Petra (common rock always in feminine).
So, yeah, Peter was that foundation stone. Someone has to be in charge of earthly management, especially for a 1billion+ membership club. Jesus knew about this long ago, that's why Peter was made the steward.

According to the Greek lexicon, Jesus named Peter "Petros " which means pebble. The rock he was referring to in this passage was "Petra" which means Boulder. The rock was not peter but Himself. (Ephesians 2:20) the cornerstone of the faith. (Isaiah 28:16 The stone which the builders rejected. (psalm 118:22) Hope this helps.

In his own words, Peter declared Jesus the Rock:
Acts 4:8-11 KJV
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,
9 If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole;
10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.

The Holy Spirit 'runs' the church. Of course Catholics are terrified out of their wits of Him! So they appoint a sinner to make sure that the Holy Spirit is kept well away.
The rock is faith in Jesus, upon which the church is founded.

He was actually referring to the principle of revelation...
He had just asked Peter who he said that Jesus was...
Peter had replied that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God.
then Jesus said that man had not revealed it to him but His Father in Heaven. (this is revelation)
and upon that "rock" ..."the principle of receiving revelation from God and not from man" , Jesus would found His church.

Excellent question. He was speaking of himself.
1 Corinthians 10:4 says the rock-mass is the Christ.
