Because it appeared simultaniously in Russia as well as USA as he was invading Russia. He decided to cross it, but later found crossing it and Russia were a bad idea. He then went back home, but by the time he got back to the river it had chosen to move to USA. The Mississippi has been sited to move around to different locaions, but it seems to prefer the USA best. Napolean never documented the moving river because he didn't want to seem crazy.
