I suffer with really bad leg cramps every 3-6 months. I can get 5 or more a day. They hurt so bad they make me cry. I asked my doctor about them and he said he had no idea what was causing them. He did prescribe quinine for me. It seemed to help some. I would ask my doctor if I were you and maybe he has some real medical knowledge and can give you an answer and or prescribe some medication or suggest dietary changes or something. I know exactly how you feel and I hope your condition improves.

I got leg cramps (and other cramps) from my body not absorbing enough calcium - that was from a thyroid problem, but some people either don't get enough calcium or absorb enough because of their vitamin D levels. First I would add both a 1000 iu vitamin D supplement to your diet (and get out in the sun more) and I would add about 1000 mcg of calcium - it's best taken at night with another calcium food, like yogurt - you could have yogurt with cut up bananas it it and take both supplements then if you wanted. Those are actually supplements all women should take to help their bones stay healthy, so it won't hurt even if it doesn't help the cramps. The second thought I had was that when I was pregnant I got them all the time and the doc said that was normal - she said concentrate on NOT pointing your toes or stretching your calves too much when you are going to bed. I started wearing socks and for some reason that helped- I don't know if I stopped poiting my feet cause of the socks or what, but besides avoiding the pointing before bed, somehow the socks helped. I wonder how old you are. When I was about 13 or 14 I had terrible leg pains and cramps, by the time I was 15 I was about 10 inches taller, I did some serious growing in that year! Growing pains!

Maybe you need more calcium? Are they in your calves? Those could be charlie horses. The best way to get rid of those is to stretch with your foot not pointing, but perpendicular to your leg. If it's in the thigh, try to knead it out with your knuckles. If nothing helps, go see your physician.

It could be one of a number of things (injury, dehydration, low blood calcium, magnesium, lack of potassium, etc.). You could try eating bananas or potatoes for potassium and see a doctor.

Lack of potassium. Eat bananas. Make sure you are hydrated and have enough sodium in your diet.
