Maybe they do, maybe they give them a few weeks to have a chance at adoption.

Our shelter holds dogs for 5 days so the owner can claim them, and then the dog is put up for adoption. We then keep the dog for as long as we can. It might be a year or more. We euthanize only when we run out of space.

The question is which is better for the dog - to be in a safe, secure environment where it's food, shelter and health needs will be taken care of, and it may end up euthanized anyway, or the dog gets hit by a car and lays on the side of the street in agonizing pain until someone stops to render aid, or they finally die from their injuries.

Call the pound. There might be a no-kill shelter in your community or neighboring community. At any rate, any shelter is better than life on the streets.

You would rather he get hit by a car or get a disease and lay by the side of the road suffering and dying? I have actually run into that scenario OFTEN over the years so it isn't fiction. It depends on the specific pound as well as the dog and the circumstances. You can call and ask the policy of your local pound/shelter and find out but basically I see dogs running around my neighborhood all the time -- I can't even walk my own dogs on leash because of all the strays -- they change constantly when the die off though and I do end up calling the pound to remove the dead bodies from the yard and street... Let's see... run loose and starve, get shot, hit by a car, die of distemper or parvo in some gutter vs being picked up by the pound and either properly placed or if unplaceable, humanely euthanized... no brainer to me....

dylan - you need to go to your local shelter and do some research... food and water are MINIMAL cost -- killing and disposing of the bodies of euthanized animals cost a FORTUNE -- your tax dollars at work -- find out what your municipality does with the body piles? Have you ever gone to the shelter/pound on kill day and seen what goes on and asked where the bodies go? There isn't a 'Forrest Lawn' out back at all... many municipalities are having problems finding places to put their garbage and are shipping it off to other places and it costs a fortune -- imagine what they have to do to dispose of the many millions of companion animals that end up being euthanized in shelters EVERY YEAR... the cost of food and water isn't even a fraction of that cost hone... and the other poster is right.. people don't kill in shelters because they get a kick out of killing animals... it is heart wrenching -- go volunteer at a shelter for a while and you will see for yourself... heck, they usually get more food donated than they know what to do with!

It depends on the shelter.

The one that I work at will only euthanize a dog if it's terminally ill, or if it just isn't able to socialize with other animals and people. We had a little lab mix that just wouldn't interact with anything, human or otherwise, even after 6 months of training and working with her. We really had no choice; no one would adopt her. Otherwise, if we can't adopt out a dog, we'll send them to another shelter that has a 2.5 day turnover rate for dog adoptions. The one downside with that shelter is that they will euthanize if a dog is too timid, or has food or toy aggression, which is usually trainable.

Whichever facility in your area that has the city impound license is required to check the dog for a microchip and hold it for a certain amount of time so it can be claimed.

Being euthanized humanely is a much better death than getting hit by a car and suffering to death on the side of the road. It is best to pick up every stray you find and either locate the owner yourself, or have animal control take the dog. There are rescue groups in most areas, too. Life on the street is NOT a life at all. This dog could also starve to death. If I had an option... I'd want to go as quick as possible.

No kill shelters lie. Often when a dog can't be adopted, they send it to a kill shelter to do the job. Or the dogs end up spending years in a cage because there is no other place for them and the shelter won't euthanize. Some no-kill shelters are worse then the quick death they'd get elsewhere. Anything's better then being hit by a car and dying by the curb.

A city or county run animal shelter usually does destroy unwanted animals if they can't be adopted. Its an unfortunate fact of life. They can only hold the animals for so long and then they have to do something with them. A humane animal shelter usually does not destroy the animals that they get. They will do everything they possibly can to get the animal adopted. But, a dog running the streets can get hit by a car, attacked by a wild animal, eat or drink something that could make it very sick or any number of things. Check your phone book for a humane/no kill shelter in your area. I'm sure you have one close by.

It depends on the pound. If you can, take him to the SPCA or look around online. Their website will usually state that they are a no-kill shelter. This mean that they will not get the dogs euthanized (of course =] ) And I'm pretty sure the SPCA would have a microchip reader, and you could possibly get the dog back to his owner!

yeah, they would. they have like a 4 day waiting period, and if the owners dont claim it, then they would put the dog down.

BUT! if they have room in the shelter, they may just stick him in there till he gets a home. is the dog friendly? maybe u could catch him, take him in urself, say he's urs, and if nobody wants him, call me, and ill come get him. if u do that, there is no way he will be put down. =]
i hope this helps!!

If you really want to know the reality,
watch this......

There are some disturbing pictures so be warned. Make sure you really want to know before you watch this.
This is my reality every day. I volunteer at Animal Control.I have been there for 2 years. I take care of injured and sick animals.
This is the sad part of my job.

For Dylan : It has nothing to do with the price of water or food.It is about over crowding and getting kennel cough, parvo, or distemper.Kennel staff don't enjoy putting animals to sleep it breaks their heart.
