When it gets to typing in the serial, I click "No" because I do not have one, I lost it, and you do not need one. It crashes, and stops responding. I can't get it to continue. Is it because maybe my CD? It's kind of scratched up, not VERY, so please don't say "Of course." Should I get a new CD, and do you think that will fix it?

xpranoz, my HP computer has a sticker on the front that says "Designed for Windows XP, Compatible with Windows Vista." And I previously installed it about a month ago, didn't like it, went back to XP, and now I'm willing to give it another chance.

Sorry. You need the serial number (product key) to install and activate.

How can the CD be scratched already? Was it a legal purchase - or are you using someone else's?

If you are thinking of "borrowing" someone else's CD, forget it. Microsoft has instituted many more piracy prevention procedures and it will not fly.

When the CD was new, there should have been a sticker on the protective envelope or case with the product key.

If you previously installed it, you may be able to find the product key with a keyfinder.

Yes, you should get a new CD. One that does NOT say Microsoft. You will have much more trouble with your computer if you install Vista. Many thousands have switched back to XP. And for good reasons. There is still a lot of hardware and software out there that wont work with Vista.
I recommend a Linux operating system. It is free, and you can even try many versions live without installing them to the hard drive.
