form opinions about the actions of others? Isn't that kind of impossible? Did he just mean for us to keep our opinions to ourselves?

This is the kind of question that makes me wish I paid more attention in Bible class in college. I remember the prof talking about these scriptures and the word that gets translated into English as "judge." Of course it doesn't translate exactly, but it meant more than just to express opinions: it meant to pass judgment the way a judge in court does: to say that a person is going to heaven or hell.

You're right. Seeing actions or hearing words in the world naturally creates an opinion in us: it is my opinion that murder is wrong, even if it is murder in a war that a whole nation supports. But that's as far as I can go: It isn't my place to say that a murderer, liar, thief, hatemonger, etc is going to hell. That is God's call only.

Of course I have an opinion about it, but I try to keep it to myself. Sometimes I succeed....

We will always know right and wrong, but the basis for judging is flawed through a human endeavor, and is not known to be so by human consciousness, so judging is erroneous, always. He also said pluck out the mote from your own eye....... So how are we to trust human thought when it has been revealed that it lies?

There is a thin line between Judging and Correcting.

When Jesus says do not judge in these passages, He was refering to judging that is without love, with care, and that is selfish and unloving.

Of course we can form opinions, opinions that will not harm anyone in anyway.

We can also correct in love.

He did not say not to judge. He said if you do judge expect the same judgment. The Bible tells us that we will even judge angels so the little things of earth should be easy.

No he did not mean that. We are called to be the salt and the light of the world. This means to expose sin and cleanse it. However the final judgement is up to God.

It means we should not judge someone righteous/saved or wicked/condemned. We are allowed to judge actions as morally acceptable or not.

Example:
Allowed - "That man is a murderer. Murder is wrong"
Not Allowed - "That man is evil, he is going to hell."

to discern wether someone is right or wrong is one thing... to berate them about it is another.

Jesus meant that we should approach one another in compassion when we see someone doing wrong. thus the whole plank in your own eye thing.
