Adult gums are tougher, teeth are more firmly rooted...also depends on what the reason is for the braces as to why it takes so long, for many it is not just about straightening teeth but also changing the bite and re-aligning the jaw.

Your orthodontist is right. On the average, wearing braces take 20 to 24months. That is, if you go back to your ortho everytime he asks you to. Usually, it is every 3 weeks or so. He makes the necessary adjustments everytime. Some people though wear their braces for even 5 years because they do not go back to have it adjusted, when they are told to. If you are seriously wanting to have your teeth fixed at an earlier time, just follow you doctor's advice. My 14-year old son is now wearing a retainers, after 18 months of braces. Good luck and you will be happy about the difference it will make on you. Just make sure though that you go to a very good orthodontist.

well as an adult you teeth are pretty much rooted where they are going to be that is why they try to get them on you when you are younger cause your teeth are not done growing and moving . i got my braces on when i was 12 and got them off when i was 18 . but my teeth where relly bad . just some pointers get some orijel it will help the first couple of weeks and dont chew gum if you need to chew something you can buy wax that has flavor to it . that is what i chewed when i had them on.. your mouth is gonna hurt like hell for the first couple of weeks and every time they tighten them untill you get use to it.

The main reason that it takes longer for adults is because our teeth are done growing and do not move as easily as a child's. If you want the smile then you got to deal with the inconvenience.

well i have braces. i am just a kid so adults aren't the only ones. i had them for like 3 years and they just took them off. thy say i have to get them again for like another 3 or 4 years. it does hurt for like a day or 2 after they tighten the wire but other wise its not so bad. there could be lots of reasons you have to get braces. like over crowded mouth, teeth growing in wrong places, and crooked teeth. i thought it would be bad to but its not. i can even chew things they say not to. like gum, and carrots!

I don't really know, maybe because adults teeth are different then younger people. The time frame also depends on the condition of the teeth. If your teeth are really crocked it could take longer I would imagine.

Because when children get them their teeth are still growing so its easier to move the teeth, while adults stopped growing so it takes a longer time to repair.

A childs gums are softer, the teeth move around easier, the adult gums are harder because of all the chewing and whatever else adults do, and the teeth dont move around as easy.

When you are an adult it just takes longer then it would for a child I think it is because a child is still growing so changes are easier to make.

That's about how long it takes for young people too. Anyways I think as you grow older your bones and teeth are more set and less malleable than when you're young.
