Having a coat drive and then giving the coats to a shelter.
Having a canned food drive and giving to a food bank.
buying backpacks and school supplies and giving them to a neighborhood school that would hand them out to the children in need.
Host a free soup supper for the community in your church with no strings attached.

I have helped out at the local animal shelter - most of them like volunteers to walk dogs, clean up anything. I can be a tear jerker, though.
