AV and S video don't have much different. S Video already saparate the video signal into luminance and chroma. While HDMI is huge different it's digital within one cable it will transmit both audio and video and so far 1080p signal (Full HD) can only through this cable.

About converting regular DVD you need DVD Player that has upscaller within (under $200) than your DVD picture will look better.

Most of the people think that HDTV will make picture look better, well people are wrong it's the source that matter (in this case is DVD Player) TV only display the signal that it receive, well some TV have manipulating image processor that help alittle bit but the main aspect is the source.

SVideo can only carry standard def signals.

HDMI can carry all types, and audio as well.

DVD PLAYERS:

Your TV will up-convert the signal to it's internal resolution. A "up-converting" DVD player can sometimes do a better job, but you dont need a up-converting player.

You should note that you must use a HDMI cable from a up-converting player (or a HD-DVD or BluRay player).

One of the best up-converting players is called the "Oppo". But these run $149-$199. The real HD-DVD player, the Toshiba HD-A3 is selling for $199 and it does up-converting in the player so this would be a smarter choice in my opinion.

HDMI CABLES:

My favorite cable site is BlueJeans, but MonoPrice carries HDMI cables for a few dollars cheaper.
