Most Germans are fluent in English, so no, not much demand for English speakers. But it's a great country and I think you'll enjoy it a lot. I did.

There are still a good amount of US Army & Air Force there, so the Germans are pretty used to Americans (including African Americans), especially in the big cities.

There's some racism, but it's more directed at Turks, not blacks. Every German I knew was very offended at any mention of the word "Nazi".

Go. Have a great time. The rest will work itself out.

I lived in Germany a few years, Germans are very friendly people.

Most people do not realize that there are many different groups of people. It's very different than the US, they are more open minded about people's background and where they come from.

I don't know what a Native speaking American is but I do know what a Native English speaking person is. (no such language as American)

In Berlin, a lot of people know English. I haven't heard of a demand though.

Life is good for African Americans in Germany. We [my family] lived in Germany a total of 8 yrs.....two tours with the miitary. Actually, the Germans are quite friendly especially to blacks, they probably want to show that they are not as prejudiced as some in the U.S.
My son is studying right now in Rome, and he says it's great there, the people are very kind and helpful, and some go out of their way to help you.
Depending on your college, they will also offer classes in the local language to help you. My son spent a part of his fall break in the Kaiserslautern/Ramstein area....3 days to be exact and he LOVED it! It's a great place and I know you will enjoy it.
I wish I had a website for you to look up, but unfortunately I don't. I'm quite sure you can find something on Google under universites in Germany.
Best to you.

Speaking German and English will benefit you a lot in Germany. It would be easier to inquire about work once you are there, see what kind of positions are available.

Most of the Nazi types are in Austria, near the Bavarian border. Salzberg is a big one. German law is very strict when it comes to that. Mein Kampf is banned, etc. But it is expensive. Housing costs are not down, food is expensive as well.

YES BUT...

Speaking German will be extremely useful in your everyday life and if you want to be integrated in the society.

Almost all foreigners who studied in Germany enjoyed it a lot. Just ask around you.

Good luck !!!

You are right but to get the real feel and flavor for how things really are you need to hook up with an African German while in the country.
The same thing goes for African Italians, African Canadians, African Mexicans or any African in the particular country you travel to.
It's the only way to see how people really live.
