I went to see some local shelter dogs and I made prok and rice for them. I was wondering if it's good for them. Many of them are emmaciated and can't digest the dry biscuits given out because of shelter stress. They seemed to like it.

Thanks everyone. I asked this question because I realized it wasn't used in commercial foods. Thankfully none of the dogs got sick and one really sick dog that was throwing up actually kept the pork and rice down. No more pork for doggies.

well they make pig ears...however, i would stay away from feeding pork. it is very fatty and can cause pancreatitis. try using chicken or turkey instead.

No meat is bad for dogs as such but depending on where you live you may have to be careful of your source. If you are buying human grade meat then pork should not be an issue in most countries. In Australia we do not have the parasites that many other countries need to worry about, but I do know that many other raw feeders from around the world always freeze pork, salmon and wild caught game before feeding it to their dogs (and themselves). My dog and cats eat chicken, turkey, pork lamb, beef, goat, fish and kangaroo. ** congratulations on making the change to non commercial food for your pets. I cannot help wondering why you are cooking it though......?

Pork causes a REAL bad upset stomach. Gives them diarrhea.

If you want to help out the shlters, you can take a few cans [about 3 or 4] Of wet dog food & mix a few other things in there.

You can add:Chopped Veggies, Chicken, [hot dog] Weiners , and some dry food. You can also add the rice in there.

This will make a bigger serving & you will have enough for most of the dogs.

No need to give them a bowl-full. Just enough for a single serving. All of the extras will be very filling & all are safe for the dogs.

Kudos for you for helping.

Pork can cause stomach upset in many dogs. I would avoid giving it to shelter dogs. I am suprised that a shelter would let you come in and give that to the dogs. They are the ones that will have to suffer the "clean up".

I have been raw feeding my dogs for 5.1/2 yrs. and do give them ground pork and pork neck bones. But, I wouldn't give it to a dog who has been fed a commercial diet, I'd probably stick to chicken (without the bones), ground hamburger, ground turkey. I applaud you for your kindness. Take care.

You will find that pork is pretty well avoided in commercial dog foods. The reason for that is dogs just don't seem to metabolize it very well.

Pork is very bad for dogs. Particularly small dogs have a hard time digesting it. Please give the dogs chicken instead.

Awee, you're so sweet to do that for the puppies. I'm sure it's okay as a once and a while treat, but they shouldn't be given it every day.

Dogs aren't exactly gourmets. Ask a vet.
And don't feed canine to your pigs. :) --jk
