The date is printed on the check when it's run, generally by computer, and is usually a couple days out from the day it's actually printed, dated the actual payday, to give time to be distributed. Checks shouldn't be distributed until the actual day they are due, the day they are dated.

If your employer is dating your checks for a date later than your payday, and giving them to you but telling you that you can't cash them until later, that's not legal.

They can be dated after the last day you work in the pay period, but they should not be dated after the payday for that pay period.

Speak to your payroll department to determine what your payday is. You check should be negotiable on that day.
