You could have anxiety about safety of your son. Due to the fact that there are news about kids not being safe in school bus, and here and there, it is no surprise you would dream something like that. However... Drowning in a river = looking for help schoolbag and books all round him = burden The way you see your son is that you are feeling him having lots of burden in his school life. You can't help but projecting him being drowned because that to you it is a only way out to help him. Yes, you care about your son's safety, but on top of that, it is related to how you see your son's school life. Being drown could symbolize seeking support. The support that you are trying to give is not good enough and therefore, you projected him being drowned with things all around him. That signifies burden you see from him. Basically, you vent this out because you want release your helpless conscience

Water means emotion. If you are drowning then you are probably drowning in some pretty serious emotions or have problems that are hard to overcome. Also, what does the water look like? Is it rough? Murky? Deep? Shallow? All of these little details can help you to see how serious it is or what it really represents. Hope that helps.

Anytime I have dreamed that I was drowning was when my head was stuffed up and I couldn't breathe when I woke up. Sorry, I know that is not symbolism, but that is what happens.
