From the looks of their answers, the main reason they hang out here seems to be so they can mock believers.

Not an atheist, but I once was. I was raised in the kind of environment where you had American Atheist magazines on the coffee table. The last place on earth I would have been is in this forum.I would have been out partying, living my Godless life to the fullest. When you truly believe that you live once and die and that's it, you are trying to suck every piece of life out of every minute of every day.Being in the religion section on a computer would have made me want to hurl. To me there's something fishy going on here. It is very odd to say the least. I think the ones here, just have antagonistic personalities, and if they weren't Atheists they would be finding some other group to antagonize. Just as so many have stated,"they enjoy it." Why? Because they are antagonists.
I will also add that I still have atheist relatives. They are extremely intelligent human beings, and that is very much an understatement. One of which is one of the most intelligent scientists around today. I promise you that you won't be seeing him on here anytime soon. I try sometimes to engage him in talk that is religious in nature, and he avoids it like the plague. We love each other even though we have different world views. These guys that come here, for the most part, are just trouble makers by nature. Some may be simply curious, those are the ones I seek to talk to. Bring on the thumbs down. I don't mind knowing I struck a nerve. You know it's the truth.

Lack of belief in a god or gods is a religious position and I can't speak for everyone, but I personally come here to be involved in something with like-minded people. I'm not answering questions related to Christianity, Islam, or Judaism. I'm answering questions related to atheism.
I don't complain that Christians are forcing their religions on me. Certainly not doing it here. Everyone has the right to their own beliefs or lack thereof. Different beliefs tend to be breeding ground for religious debate. I could care less what everyone else chooses to believe. No one is going to change my beliefs.
This section of YA isn't exclusively for people who believe in a religion. One doesn't need to believe in a religion in order to have an opinion or knowledge about the religion.

You just don't get it at all.
I am happy here and not as you suggest.
I am not making myself miserable, not as you suggest
I never complain that you are forcing anything down my throat.
I do make sense but there are none so blind as those who do not wish to see.
I have every right not to believe and I have every right to make my presence known here.
If that makes you unhappy and miserable, you know what to do. Stay away.
The actual answer to this question has been clearly stated many times before. Were you just not listening?
Listen very carefully:
One does not have to be suffering from cancer to be interested in discussing a cure.
One does not have to be afflicted with religion to be interested in discussing it with mature adults and offering a cure - for there IS a cure.
Got it this time?
To Steve N above. Atheism may well be a low percentage in the US but, in Europe, it is, on average, 75%. Why is the US so backward? Why can't you think beyond your own borders? There is a whole other world out there.
Add to that that a large number of atheists in the US are 'closet' atheists. You and the statistics just don't know that they are there. You would also be shocked if you knew how many of the clergy are atheist.

Because no one actually talks about theology and people keep asking questions directed at atheists.
"You don't believe yet you come here and complain that we are forcing our Religion in your face?"
I doubt that you would find anyone saying that someone here is forcing religion on them It's in real life that some theists try constantly to turn the US into a theocracy.
"Why not find a site where you can be happy instead of making yourselves miseriable?"
I'm neither unhappy nor miserable here. As I said no one here is talking about theology least of all theists. Plus so many questions including yours are directed at atheists that one would think the room was called "Ask an atheist".
Lastly there are so many misconceptions and so many questions about atheists from theists here that it would seem that we are desperately needed and wanted.

I notice that no one gets hit on in this section. I find that fascinating. I've also noticed that there is little cross over, except for some of the questions which try to say two things at the same time. They talk about God but deny Him in the same question. I'm looking for faith I guess.

That's a real generalisation.
I come here as I am interested in people with belief. It's interesting to discuss it and understand their point of view.
I think the people that say that religion is being forced on them are talking about everyday life rather than specifically on this site. Because, in this I agree with you, why come to a R&S site and then get annoyed about religion being forced.
Besides, my last point would be that it is the right of someone that doesn't believe in R&S to discuss it as it is for someone that does.

Scared to death of us, aren't you?
Imagine what a sewer this place would be if we weren't here. Other than the atheists and the pagans and the occasional Buddhist, you've got practically no-one here who can do anything other than launch childish attacks on others and post the same transparent lies about atheists over and over again.
I enjoy coming here. What I like most is the great sense of humor that many of the atheists here exhibit, but I also like learning what makes others tick. I think I've got a really good understanding of why Christians believe as they do, and I'm fascinated at how much they talk about "faith" and yet how frantically they deny any role for faith in their religious beliefs.

The debates are interesting, and I learn something new every day. Just because I don't follow a Theist religion doesn't mean I shouldn't be allowed to read this religion and SPIRITUALITY page.

I think you are saying that if they feel that we are shoving our religion in their faces that would make them miserable right? They are here to argue. They are here to mock and they are having fun doing it.

I'll wager if you actually asked us, you'd find that we are not miserable.
On a board like this I expect to see religious points of view and it does not bother me in the least. All I care about is keeping theology out of government. People can think what they like in their own homes.
