My husband is no longer in the military, but he was for many years, and he is also an atheist. He's a veteran of the Iraq War. He was a foxhole atheist. He never prayed to God the whole time.

***slowly raising my right hand***

You aren't about to assign me to a detail are you? If so, then I'm a Christian, oh, wait a minute, it's not Sunday, and I've already ETS'd. HECK YEAH I'm an atheist!

Edit: Father K, I was in the foxholes, and my faith was in my RIFLE and my squad. No god ever stopped a bullet on a battlefield, and you would know that if you ever set foot on one. You damn sheltered theists can hold your innacurate views of the military and life in general because OTHER people place their lives in harms way to protect you. Invalidating their experience is disrespectful to those without whom YOUR life and religious beliefs may be forced to change dramatically. You sicken me.

Nephew is a retired Army Sgt and atheist. Also a combat veteran who agrees with Heathen's Daughter: combat entrenched his atheism. Father K is correct in that the cowardly christians soldiers huddled in the foxholes and wouldn't leave when it was time to fight.

He should write a book on 'How the taxpayers funded the government shoving religion down my throat for 12 years'.

My husband is a disabled vet and athiest. Always has been.
edit: Sorry Father K but your wrong. My husband told me that the foxholes he was in just made him an ever stronger atheist. Fox holes MAKE athiest far more then not.

I'm an Atheist and military brat! Does that count? Although I haven't lived with my parents in over 6 years.

Ex-air force and was an atheist at the time but was 'forced' to be a closet version. Out of the military, Yahooooooo! No more hiding.

I refuse to have anything to do with wars. Ever.

So, atheist, but never joined any army in any country I lived in.

Well, that, and I was of course too scared to be able to disprove the whole "there are no atheists in foxholes" stuff.

My soon to be ex-husband was Air Force and he's an agnostic-deist. That's pretty close to being an atheist!

I never entertained the notion of going military. Too much mindless conformity.

Some messed up things happened in your life.
Thats not a good reason to not dissprove God.

Don't listin to others that will teach you false predictions or false prophets that are confused. Life isen't simple just dont give up.

I gain nothing for telling you this so it's not a lie.

You need prayer.
