No. If the food sucks, or the service is slow, but the waiter is friendly, tries to make it right, etc., I tip 20%.

If the waiter is rude, screw him. Occasionally, I'll leave a penny just to make a point. I have little patience for rudeness.

EDIT: To clarify for those who don't like the penny tip thing:

1. I have RARELY done this. The server has to be exceptionally nasty and obnoxious to earn this particular tip.

2. I leave a penny so they know that the lack of a tip was NOT an oversight.

3. I work in customer service. I know how much it sucks, and sometimes I have really bad days...but it doesn't give me an excuse to be rude to my customers. EVER. My tolerance for rude/obnoxious customer service is EXTREMELY low.

Yes, they have to pay taxes on the assumed 10% they get off your total bill, regardless of if you tip or not. So of course I do tip at least 10% to 15%. I tip good Waiters and Waitresses alot more though a min. of 30%. I have been known to leave a $5.00 tip on a cup of coffee.

EDIT: To the people who say they receive pay for their job, tipped employees receive One Half of Federal Min. Wage. Making it about $2.80 a hour. Plus they have to pay taxes on assumed tips from their total food or drink sales. Assuming you had a $30 food bill and did not leave a tip that is an additional hours worth of wages they have to pay taxes on. Your bill gets big enough and you don't tip then they actually have to pay to wait on you. That is not right.

The penny thing, that is just insulting, spiteful, demeaning and rude. How can you protest bad behavior by exhibiting bad behavior? Just because these people are in service does not mean they are your servants. There life and livelihood should not be at your "whim of the day" to determine if they were rude or lousy considering you really know nothing of anything going on even in the restaurant.

I fail to see what the christian/atheist bit has to do with it, but a rude waiter either gets NO tip, or I make the tip 1 cent, as THAT sends a message.

I tip rude waiters less than polite ones...but if downright suck as a waiter, I leave them the "tip of the day" on the receipt which reads:

tip=service

I tip one penny. It's not because I'm a cheapskate as one person answered, it's to let them know that I did not forget to tip, that I am insulted by their rudeness.

I do understand that they may be having the worst day of their life, but if so, why are they at work? I'd never be rude to a customer, and my customers used to be corporate lawyers!

I have left nothing before and had a waitress run after me and ask me for her tip. It was embarrassing for me and my group, we had to stand there in front of the entire restaurant and tell her we thought her service was lousy. From then on, the one penny let them know.

No I refuse to tip some one who has been rude. I work damn hard for my money and they receive pay for there job so the tip is only if they do a good job a poor job will receive no tip from me.

On the other hand I have left large tips to servers who do an excellent job or are super busy but still try there best and have a good attitude.

What possible difference does it make whether I am atheist or Christian?
Never tip rude behavior. Go to the manager and complain. That is what he is paid to take care of.
Someone rude should not be waiting tables.
I thought this when I was a child and Christian and as an adult Atheist.

I tip rude waiters and waitresses ten percent and I tip good ones fifteen to twenty percent.

Unsure on faith/religion.

Usually the bare minimum of 10% or possibly less if they were absent most of the time and then rude whenever they managed to come around.
