Well you first you need to look at it in different perspectives. Academically colleges need a few years of some language before they accept you. Next as other people have mentioned many people of hispanic background are moving into the United States so you will come across Spanish people a lot. Then there is job wise its easier to get a job if you have a second language like spanish my sister got a fairly good job just because she could translate for spanish speaking people. Few reasons to take Spanish:
Spanish is a beautiful language
Spanish is the easiest language to learn (if you do not know any languages, not even English). That makes it the easiest second language
Spanish is used in several countries that you might like to travel to - Mexico, Peru (other South American Countries), Spain
If you want to travel to countries such as Italy, Portugal, Philippines or other countries that use languages that originated from Latin, it would be easy to learn that language if you already know Spanish
If you go to school in the US, Spanish is second language.

If you live in the USA, especially in the west coast and southwest, Spanish is growing. Half of the population under 5 is Latino. You don't want to miss out on job opportunities in heavily bilingual areas because you don't understand the language.
