im trying to understand if jesus was refering to the father as in a higher position literaly (like the hiearchy of power...woman, man, jesus, God) or was he infering that the father had better qualities than he did. i hope you understand my question, because this is important for me to know the direct conotation. thank you !!!!!

The original Greek is below. However for this verse you have to remember this is Jesus speaking when He was a man on Earth. While He was on Earth He had laid aside His power and glory. Thus making the Father greater than Him. Once He resurrected and took up His power and glory again He was once again equal to the Father.

At that moment the Father was greater. Jesus humbled himself.

Philippians 2:6-11 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: (7) But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: (8) And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. (9) Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: (10) That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; (11) And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

"Greater" in the reference that Jesus was using at the time, was about Gods strength..so to speak...Jesus had set aside his divinity to come and be human..he was 100% human and still 100% God. Jesus was not relying on earthly attributes, he relied on the Father for that.
