Simply put a throw is when you lift an opponent off his feet from a standing position and throw him to the ground. A take down in the simplest terms e.g. A double leg take down would mean knockng your opponent off his feet with a type of tackle position on to his back. Not much lift. Now there are several different techniques you can use for either a "throw or a "takedown". These are just simple examples.

A takedown usually involves you grabing the person in some way and going down to the floor taking them with you, when you throw someone it implys that you are still standing up and your throwing the opponent down to the ground

a takedown.. you end up going to the ground with your opponent, and a throw is when you "throw or toss" the opponent... but you are not going to the ground.
