Have you ever been driving the speed limit (or even a little above) and looked into your rear view mirror only to see a car following right behind you?
I can't see why following so closely is a remotely good idea. If the driver ahead of you decides to slam on the brakes and you rear end them then you'll get the ticket. So I guess my main question would be "Why risk all the extra insurance costs just to get somewhere a little faster?"

Some drivers just seem to be attracted to the car in front of them. I usually slow down until they decide to pass me then try to resume the speed limit with decent spacing. Almost as bad are those who will roar by, pull in front of you and slow to less than what you were driving. Passing them usually just starts them back into the cycle again.

first don't make the mistake of assuming if you are hit from behind that you will be absolved off all blame. the ins. industry has come up with a neat little term called contributory negiglance you could be assigned say 50% fault just for being on the road. theory being if you had stayed at home you would not have been in an accident. We live in a complicated world where the line between right and wrong is very wide.

I would like to see a bumper sticker that says "This is not your wheel barrow, so quit pushing!".
I slow down for such drivers, till they pass or pull over and let them around. But there are those that do this who will pass in no passing zones, for those it is bye bye. They never get close enough to pass, unless I feel that the risks are too great.

Some people do it just to be jerk-offs. It's happened to me twice where someone would tailgate me although the traffic in the other lane was going much faster than me. Another time was when I kept trying to pass this jerk and he kept getting in front of me although we were the only two cars on the road.

I see more and more accidents resulting from following too closely to the vehicle ahead. If you see one of these drivers who loves to tailgate, pull over and allow them to go by. It's not worth a damaged vehicle.

You're right, its not worth it. I don't understand why people have to tail gate either.
