If you are pulled over and have a radar detector, do you MOST OF THE TIME automatically get a ticket? I have heard that some police officers consider the detector your warning? I live in a state where they are legal.

II would not call it "automatic", as most officers have a tolerance, and only ticket those over that tolerance.

There are some officers that consider a radar detector as intent to speed, so it could increase your chances if you are near their tolerance, especially if you try hiding it. (There are several "clues" where an officer can tell you have a detector, even if you remove it before he approaches the car)

I personally don't care, they are legal, and your right to own. As an FTO, I also remind the new officers of this, but they are free to make their own decisions

If I stopped you for speeding, and you had a radar detector, I would advise you return it for a new one (I save this one for when I work RADAR and the detector doesn't catch me in time). In all other instances, I could care less. They are legal to possess and use. What dictates the issuance of the ticket, more than anything, is the eggregiousness of the offense and the attitude of the violator.

Any officer who has worked RADAR for a while knows how to defeat a detector.

I have found, in my experience, the most effective way at avoiding a ticket for speeding is to drive the speed limit. No one will ever see that $100-$200 "you're gonna get stopped now and get a ticket" alarm on the dash.

If you've got a radar detector, the odds are you're going to get the ticket because the police are not likely to buy that you were "accidentally" speeding.

Simply put, if they see you've got one, they're going to think that you fully intended to be speeding...but didn't want to get caught.

And **that** is most likely why you'll get a ticket pretty much automatically - even in a state where they're legal.

You are less likely to get a warning from me if you have a RADAR detector.
