i need some help. i have to write a spanish essay about my routine ten years ago. the assignment sheet says to write in the imperfect tense. but, would sentences like "i got up at 7 in the morning, ate breakfast, etc." be in the preterite because aren't those finished events in the past?
thanks in advance.

You have your reasoning right, but it's the imperfect that is used for unfinished/repetitive events in the past. Try putting the words "used to" in the sentence temporarily, if it still makes sense, use the imperfect.

No, because you're talking about a daily routine, and the imperfect is used for continued or repeated action. So, you would put all the verbs in the imperfect. The preterit would be used if you were saying that you got up one time, like this morning at 7.
