John 20:23 - Jesus says, "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained." In order for the apostles to exercise this gift of forgiving sins, the penitents must orally confess their sins to them because the apostles are not mind readers. The text makes this very clear.
The priest absolves you from your sin then instructs you on how you go about not sinning again then he gives you a penance (i.e. prayer of action).
Just as through the power of God the Apostles healed the wounds and resuurected the physical body
So too through the power of God do they and there successors heal the wounds of the soul caused by sin.

It's not up to the priest. He is just a witness, confirming the forgiveness God freely gives. The penitent is the real minister of the sacrament. It is the penitent who prays, who expresses remorse and resolves to improve. The priest merely helps the penitent through the process, absolving on behalf of God and the people of God.

The absolution is given. The sin is forgiven. By the power given by Christ. No further intercession is needed or proscribed.
The Priest does NOT keep records. If he is blessed (as I am) - he simply forgets the sins.
As a matter of fact, I am not even allowed to ever bring up ANYTHING included in a Confession....not even to the penitent!!

The preist is interceding on gods behalf. As in jesus as in peter. The theaching as I was taught is that when Jesus told peter whatever he binds on earth is bound in heaven etc and told him he is the rock that he will build his church upon... I think you should be getting the point of what I am saying. If not, Peter was the first pope now think.

There is but ONE PRIEST ONCE AND FOREVER and thats JESUS CHRIST
any thing or anyone short of that is a LIE !!!
and if that is a man or woman they are LIARS!!!
AND NO WHERE IN THE BIBLE ANYWHERE does it say for a man to have the ability to cleanse another from SIN...
JESUS CHRIST and HIM alone is the only one......
and if it just took a normal man then Christ died in vain........
and that just isnt True......
Sorry Catholics...a few hail marys and rose beads wont get you to heaven........it takes the BLOOD of JESUS CHRIST and HIM ALONE !!! as it is written in the BIBLE
PERIOD !
and to the Catholics.......
man is man.......and your priests are as evil and defaming as you , so how can they atone for what they themselves are guilty of !!!
SIN !!!

I don't know that the priest is obligated to do anything after you confess. The confession is between you and God, the priest is just a witness.

James 5:16
Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.

He doesn't intercede like that, he gives you a list of prayers to pray to absolve your sin. He just listens and gives you your 'punishment'.
