The Battle of Chancellorsville ended the Union offensive in Virginia; Union forces would not return until General Grant took command of the Army.

To big effects were the death of Stonewall Jackson and the replacement of Joseph Hooker. Jackson, Lee's best general, would be sorely missed by the Confederate forces. Hooker would be replaced by George Meade, who would defeat Lee at Gettysburg two months later. Meade would remain commander of the Union Army of the Potomac until the end of the war, though Grant would running the war from his headquarters with that army.
