"These new tvs" are already here. They're called HDTVs and all local terrestrial television broadcasters are REQUIRED by the government to switch over to an all digital broadcast after the Super Bowl in 2009. Most local stations are already broadcasting in HDTV.

Your old fashioned analog television SHOULD continue to work just fine if you have standard cable, or if you purchase a set-top converter box after the change over. SHOULD is the key word there. 39% of US households currently have HDTV sets, and there is HUGE demand for the cable companies to provide more HDTV programming. But cable lines only have so much bandwidth available. So what happens is that to add new HDTV channels, cable companies have to remove older analog channels (which take up more bandwidth anyway). So you're going to eventually see fewer analog channels on your standard cable subscription (but your rates will continue to rise).

By law in the United States, Standard cable compatible with analog TV sets must be available until 2012. The same applies to satellite TV. After that you will need a converter for your analog TV set to view cable or satellite TV.

The February 17, 2009 date is the last day of free over the air ANALOG TV. BUT DIGITAL Free Over The Air TV is already out there in most areas. The only free over the air stations left on February 18, 2009 will be the low power stations and repeater stations which do not have a digital TV assignment yet. They basically have to wait for analog high power stations to shut off so that there will be channels to assign to their transmitters.

Antenna signals are now Analog and Digital.

Older televisions could only pick up the analog signals, newer sets can pick up both.

In Feb 2009, the analog signals will stop.

You dont have to worry if you have cable or Sat systems.
