It's best, to put the seat and lid down, before flushing, that way the flushing action, doesn't spray, germs into the rest of the bathroom...

Leave the seat down after you have finished. This allows the next person to sit down immediately.
This assumes the toilet is available to people of either sex - a man might sit or stand, depending on what he needs to do, but a woman can only sit, no matter what she has to do. So there's a 75% chance the next user will need to sit, and only a 25% chance they will need to stand.

My exhusband and I decided that since we both lived in the house it was just as legitimate for him to leave the seat up as for me to leave it down. We just both made sure we looked before we got down to business. I honestly don't understand why this issue is such a big deal to everybody else! Shouldn't you look before sitting anyway? Personally, I have real problems to get upset about.

In order to be considerate to everyone else, please place the seat back down after urinating, and close the lid also.

There is nothing worse than falling into the cold ceramic toilet in the middle of the night.....

Down and close the lid. It looks more attractive (can toilets look attractive?). Besides it helps prevent things from accidentally falling in.

Down and closed is the proper etiquette.

That way there's no "unsightly" misses or other things visible when someone walks by the toilet.

Down-- That way when us girls go to sit down, we don't fall in. We would do it ourselves, but we're just lazy. That's how the whole "polite" thing came along...
