I am being forced to get this shot (not by my mom, but my the health nurses. They are going to schools and making everyone get it without filling out a form first even!) and I was wondering if it hurt. Please be honest.

Well I have had IV's and blood tests and a shot that goes right into my muscle. How much will this one hurt compared to those?

There is no way you're not going to feel the needle prick. The needles used to administer vaccines are usually very small; and the amount given is usually quite small. This means that there will be less discomfort to the patient, and if the person giving the shot really knows what he/she is doing that's even better. There might be a little soreness at the injection site afterward for awhile; but maybe not. What you can do to minimize any discomfort is to carry on a conversation with the person giving you the shot. You can ask what the shot does, if there are any side effects; or you can talk about something else. The whole procedure actually takes a couple of minutes and should be over by the time you realize the shot's been given. It is a good thing to get the mumps shot. Mumps is something you definitely don't want to get.

Do Mumps Hurt

As everyone has said, there's no use in lying; sure it hurts. But only for about 3 seconds.

This issue has been in the news for a while so I can see that you are familiar with it. Frankly, you are very fortunate that you live in a country that is committed to the health of it's citizens. I can remember getting these shots over 50 yrs. ago...polio, smallpox, measles, mumps, tb, etc.... Because of that I never contracted any of these diseases or spread them to anyone else. Yes, it might hurt for a while but not as much as the pain of having a deadly disease.

You'll be fine.

Just a tiny bit, the same as all needles. It feels like a pinch but kind of more painful. It's only quick...1 second. Your arm might be numb or painful in the spot.
