a beagle would be a much better choice for you. beagles are very bright & smart dogs. they're capable of being housebroken extremely easily and they're gentle with little children. beagles were used as hunting dogs back then and the reason for having a dog like this is because they're very smart and able to find anything in your house, but they can tend to be stubborn. border terriers are a little too active, though. they bark too much and they have a high nature in things meaning they are great outdoor dogs and enjoy exercise. border terriers can be quite destructive, no not like a pit bull can be. i mean destructive with toys. when they teeth, they can bite pretty hard and i mean ANYTHING. your hands, feet, fingers, anything. they wont care what it is they have in their mouth on as long as it's going to relieve their pain. same goes with beagles but you can easily train a beagle out of this. overall, beagles...choose those!

I don't have personal experience with either one, but I do know that those two breeds are entirely different. Beagle is a scenthound. Beagles love to live in packs, and are notoriously difficult to housetrain. Border Terriers? Sorry, wish I could tell you more, but all I can say is that, of all the Terriers, the Border is the one I find most appealing. Sorry if that doesn't help you much! Beagles are easy to find. Border Terriers, not so much. Both Hounds and Terriers are kinda independent ... so, maybe, not so snuggly? I would have to do a lot of research before I'd feel right recommending one over the other! Both are great breeds, guess it just depends on what you want or need from your dog! Learn all you can before you decide.

Depends on the individual animal really.. but in my experience both are independent and stubborn. although beagles .. it's not so much stubborn as.. tuned out.. If not trained from the beginning their nose will lead them more than you do.
Terriers in general are meant to be independent it's bred into them.. whereas beagles are bred to work in packs.
Both make great pets if you have the energy to give them enough exercise.. neither breed will do well with just the back yard.. they need engaging exercise.. 3 or 4 short walks .. (or 1 or 2 long ones.. like 3 miles or more)..are great for the beagle (the beagle I have now is my first, so i've learned by using the hit and miss method.. if he misbehaved it was always do to boredom from not enough exercise) .. the border terrier.. not quite as long, but vigorous walks are great.. (and socialization is important with any terrier.. they easily become problems around other animals if this is not done) ..
Any breed you choose is going to have its ups and downs.. and adopting an older dog of either breed is a good idea if you are less active.. (although at 6 my beagle is still in need of the same exercise.. )
Oh and a tip.. if you have a rodent problem in your house.. go with the terrier.. lol.. the beagle may tell you it's there, but the terriers are better ratters than most domestic cats..

Look here to compare them (the good and bad of both breeds)
Beagle: http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/beagles.html
Border Terrier: http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/borderterriers.html
This is a great site to check out different breeds to see which may be right for you. It is unbiased as it is not written by breeders (who always thing their breed is wonderful, lol)
Personally I like the Border Terrier, as I love the tenacious terrier personality :)

We have a 3 year old beagle who is my baby :) He's kind of sassy with howling(when people walk by) other than that he's been a wonderful dog. Terrier's tend to be very hyper.

Any terrier breed is also independent and stubborn.
Read as much as you can and talk to breeders of both. Learn as much as you can and then decide what's best for you.

Any dog can be stubborn and independent.
Try doing a search of dogs in shelters near you (www.petfinder.com). You may fall in love with a breed you didn't consider.
Just be sure to do your research before adopting or buying ANY dog. And remember: NEVER buy from a pet store or backyard breeder.
