I have a six month old black lab. I cannot give this dog enough exercise. He always seems to want more. I run him between 4 and 6 miles a day. Does anyone else have this same problem and what do you do about it? Do they require less as they get older. He was neutered last week and he still wanted run. Suggestions?

I have a black and a yellow. Labs do have energy and lots of it. But they do calm down. At six months my yellow male was a terror and had more energy than I thought possible. I played lots and lots of fetch with him and many long walks. By a year he lost a great deal of that energy ( he still had more than most dogs but I noticed a big difference) By two he was 110 times better, and now at 3 he is a mellow giant. The more you hive him to do the happier you will be. Kong toys and other chew toys are great. Doggie parks or other dogs are a great energy draining source. Stick with it they are the best dogs when they grow up. My female black Lab really mellowed out but 3, at 2 she was calmer. But before that both dogs were monsters, but I stayed really really fit.

Yes...I have a 9mo black lab and a 2 year black lab mix. Yes, they are wild...and I was just talking to another teacher today about her much older lab...apparently hers still acts like a puppy. I don't see them calming down anytime in the near future!

Do you have a place you can take him to play fetch? That helps my dog quite a bit. We play for a while, then I walk him so he is well behaved on the leash. Buy the Kong toys you can hide treats inside (and make it so it is difficult to get out.) My dog will run around with that thing for at least 20 minutes trying to get the treat out. Also...I'm not saying to take on another dog if you aren't ready...but my dogs spend quite a bit of time chasing each other and wrestling around the house. Perhaps you can find another dog friend in the neighborhood or at a dog park to let him play with.

I have to be honest...you take your dog a lot further than I do. I could never last 6 miles a day...I'm sure he could, but I'd pass out.

I have three labs. One of every color. They all have a lot of energy. The males are fixed and 3 and the female is fixed and she is 2. But they all play a lot together during the day, so they are usually calm at night. When they were puppies they never slowed down. As they got older they calmed. Your will too. Just keep running/walking him and maybe try playing fetch in the backyard with him too, other kinds of activities other than running to keep you from over exerting yourself!
Also, if you have a pool, or access to a pond or s/where he can swim that would be great. One of mine will swim until he is almost too tired to do anything else but eat and go to bed! Just watch him so that he doesn't get too tired and drown or anything.

Good Luck

I grew up with a black lab, best dog ever. He was crazy and never got tired, I feel your pain. Brutus calmed down when he was around 2 years old. I brought him on two 45 minute walks a day and would frequent the park daily. I would go home and crash and he was ready to go again. If I got a lab now I would sign himup for dog daycare once or twice a week to get him tired out.

He'll calm down when he gets older...

Find another dog in the neighborhood he can play with - My Aussie plays with the year old Lab (Mine is >13 years old) next door - They play for about an hour and are both completely wiped out afterwords!

I have a 9 mth old female and she is on the go constantly. Chasing my cats, chasing my kids and playing with the other 2 dogs I have.

She will eat anything, shoes, table legs, phones even the molding around the back door. I am told she will eventually calm down.

Good Luck!!!!

My friend has a black lab. He is also neutered and he is 3 years old now. And he hasn't slowed down one bit. Actually he is as destructive (eats walls, anything wood) now as he was as a puppy. He is hoping he will calm down soon too.

Mine calmed down by 2 years of age, and stopped being destructive by 1 year of age.

What are his blood lines?? Some (Pipers Pacer & Ms Chief) were known for their endless supply of energy.
