A British Teacher in Sudan has been arrested and threatened with jail for blasphemy. Her crime was to allow the 6 & 7 year olf children in her class to name a class teddy bear Muhammed.
The Ministry of Education have said she may face forty lashes and/or imprisonment.
Do you think this is the correct approach?

I think that is foolishness. Why would u arrest a person just because they named a teddy bear Muhammed? That is sooooo stupid. I think that is the wrong approach. It doesn't make sense AT ALL.

No it isn't right nor is it part of shariah law. Ridiculous really and surely it isn't 'blasphemy'.
Naming the teddy bear Muhammad is not appropriate and the woman should of been aware of this since she should of educated herself on the culture and religion of the country she was going to teach in.
The punishment not only is extreme a punishment just shouldn't be imposed at all unless the teacher had intention to be disrespectful. Even then the punishment should be getting fired and deported.

I'm not muslim, I'm Christian. I don't think it's right though. I don't think it should matter what the teddy bear is named. In Sudan Muhammed is a relatively common name so why wouldn't it be thought of? If it had happened in America, the name might have been Ashley or Rebecca(biblical) or Mary(biblical), or anything like that and it would have been ok. It's not fair. This is most definitly racially/religiously motivated.

Westerners should learn the religions and customs of the lands where they go to work and respect their laws and customs. She has degraded Prophet Mohammad by calling a teddy bear Mohammad. They will just teach a lesson. I don't think Sudanese will put her in prison for this.

May be you can name your dog Jesus and it does bother any one in your culture but you should know that calling Mohammad to a dog or an stuffed animal will anger Muslims when you are in their country. You can't imagine the extent of love and respect Muslims have for Prophet of God.

If a foreigner goes to stores in Pyjama every body stares and criticises him in west though he is completely covered from his waste to ancles. He sees many young girls hungry of attention walking around in stores in minimum length shorts and tops that cover only half of their chest. Guy in pyjamas wonders what a shameless culture it is thinking about complains on his pyjamas and looking how the girl is dressed. And same type of women compalin why they can't wear what ever they choose to wear out in Saudi Markets.

No way!! That is way too harsh. Just let her rename the teddy bear and forgive and forget. That's what I say at least.

With the facts known through the article ...
I would say it is not right.

Having said that....
but if they have a case where the person has a history of such incidents then I may change my opinion.

Well it's kind of dumb to name an animate object after the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH*). But if she knew this and did it anyway then she should be punished. I don't know anything about the laws of Sudan but I think that is a little stupid.
