I'm going to start working out again (took a 2 month hiatus). I'm thinking about joining a reasonably priced gym, or buying an inexpensive treadmill or eliptical off craigslist, etc... Which is a better bet? I'm trying to think of all aspects.. price, convienence, quality, etc.. What's your opinion on which would be better?

** The gym would be 3 miles away.

Easy question - gym membership.

A gym membership is usually cheaper than a decent treadmill and by paying so much per month you will have access to a huge array of exercising equipment and of course it is more fun to work out with people around, especially if you goto the gym with friends of yours. Of course if you really want to become fit and toned up one treadmill is not usually enough so its very useful to have the other equipment around.

Their presence encourage presence should encourage you to work harder and push yourself to the limit. Finding the motivation to work out in your room can be quite hard which is why company is so important.

I would say a gym would be your best bet. If you were to purchase a piece of equipment like a treadmill, I'm afraid you would get bored with the monotony of doing the same workout everyday. With a fitness facility, you get a wide variety of options to switch up your routine. A lot of people find that they stop working out due to boredom but a gym will get rid of that factor. You can also get in some strength training or fitness classes, which you obviously cannot get from one piece of cardio equipment.

I feel that a gym is always the better alternative to get in shape. Gyms are better I feel because you have more distractions while at home trying to work out, when you go to the gym you arent thinking about who is calling you or if your whites are done is the laundry, all you are thinking about is getting in shape and reaching your goals. Also gyms and much safer and a good place to get advice on form, diets, or even motovation. I hope this helps you with your question.

in your case since it's only 3 miles away, definetly the gym. more equipment makes keeping the workout varied much easier. seeing other people in better and worst shape than yourself can be quit motivating. watching others can also help to improve your own exercise form and techniques. the gym environment can also be very uplifting much more than a treadmill in the spare bedroom, etc.

Unquestionably the gym.

It's easier to motivate oneself in a gym. Plus, you can learn from the other folks working out there, incl. asking for a friendly tip or two from people one sees regularly during one's workout.
