We have used Pleasant Holidays, Expedia and Travelocity to set up airfare with hotels. They rank everything by price. The cheapest packages are usually Honolulu on Oahu, and the cheapest flights are from San Francisco.
There are hostels to stay in with couple's rooms that are less expensive than hotels. The hotels become lower-priced as one travels away from Waikiki Beach in Honolulu.
I love all of Hawaii and think Honolulu is just fine. There's lots to do, The Bus is cheap and you can ride it all around the island for $2.00 or so. There's a part of Waikiki Beach with a breakwater where you can swim peacefully without being pounded by waves. There's a great zoo and aquarium, and the weather is always divine, whatever the season. Watch the sun and sunburn; the sun is different in humid tropical climates and you can burn very easily, a good way to ruin a trip!
Go to the bookstore and read up in Lonely Planet or Let's Go guidebooks for good places to stay, what to do, etc. You needn't buy the guidebook if you don't want to, just use it for research.
Online you'll find tourist offices for Hawaii and all the islands. They'll mail you brochures, etc. which should help. Also, getting an Entertainment Book (also online) helps with prices for things when you are there.
Good luck and Aloha!

It all depends on what you mean by "cheap." If you go from the mainland U.S. to Oahu, it will most likely be cheaper than going to an outer island (Maui, Big Island, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai). There is plenty to do on Oahu that is cheap or free so you won't get bored, that's for sure! I suggest buying a book called Oahu Revealed by Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman. In the back there are several dozen listings for hotels and condos -- inexpensive up to ridiculous! One place I've stayed at more than once is the Hawaiian King Condos on Nohonani St. (It's listed in the book I mentioned.) Their rates are pretty consistently $85/night, which isn't bad. The location is good -- short walk to the beach -- and the condos themselves are decently furnished with small kitchens so you can save on eating at restaurants. The Queen Kapiolani Hotel is also rather inexpensive and it's even closer to the beach as well as right across the street from the Honolulu Zoo. From certain rooms you can hear the monkeys calling to each other at night...LOL! The Royal Grove Hotel is even less expensive than the other two places I've mentioned. There are definitely ways to go to Hawaii inexpensively. Your biggest expense will probably be your airfare. Sign up on Travelocity, Aloha Airlines, and Hawaiian Airlines for their web specials. They'll send you emails with low airfares! I take advantage of those whenever I can for myself as well as people on the mainland who like to visit us here in Hawaii.
For fun, inexpensive or free things to do on Oahu, read below.
Rent snorkel gear from Snorkel Bob's -- it's about $10 for a week!
Climb Diamond Head.
Rent a car or take The Bus around the island. Stop at Matsumoto's or Aoki's on the North Shore for shave ice. Mmmm!
Lie on the beach.
Take a catamaran ride off Waikiki Beach (about $15 pp).
Visit the Pali Lookout.
Visit the USS Arizona Memorial (Pearl Harbor).
Read Oahu Revealed for more ideas!
Aloha :)

YES A CHEAP TRIP EXISTS! for a school fieldtrip, my fellow seventh graders and I went on a 4 day educational mini cruise from O'ahu to Lana'i for 400 bucks each.
it's only cheap if you're going from one island to another, not from the mainland to Hawaii.
Take a flight to Las Vegas, then fly from there to Hawaii. It will be slightly cheaper.

You can try: www.ClubABCTours.com
They have trips all over the world, & their price includes
airfare & hotel.
I have used them in Europe & have always been satisfied. Some of my friends have used them all over the world & have no complaints. They have always been most reliable & reasonably priced.
Hope this helps.
