I think the most useful thing about surfing is the ability to leave the rest of your life on the beach and be in the moment. Sure fitness and balance contribute to your overall health which in turn improves your life overall, but knowing that at the end of the day, no matter how bad your day was, if you can go out and catch a wave it resets everything.

A friend of my dads was the victim of a home invasion attack. The guy didn't steal anything, he just beat the crap out of my dads friend and his wife. On a side note the story made national news, and he and his family have been on dr phil. Anyway, he among other things screwed up his shoulder really bad. The dr's were not sure if it would ever heal. But once he got his strength back some, he would just paddle out on his surf board in calmer waters. Eventually he got all his strength back, and within a few months it felt fine.
So if thats what you mean by useful yes. It can be very useful. If you mean like career wise, probably not unless you want to be a proffesional surfer. It is a good work out though.

There are 2 kinds of surfers:1. The contest surfer and 2. The locals who don't see surfing as a sport but a way of life both spiritually and mentally.

Surfing takes mad skills. Its not as easy as it looks. Surfing helps with other sports also such as skateboarding. Most people like to surf mainly for the thrill. Most people dont understand what it takes to surf. How many fat surfers are there?? maybe 3. Surfing is a mental game and teaches you patience.

I wouldnt call it a skill, more like a lifestyle, or religion...
I have yet to meet someone who would think of surfers or water folk as wankers, if someone tried to call me a wanker for surfing Id tell him he was the &%$*@* wanker and punch him in his face...I doubt that would ever happen considering I live in surf city USA...

In the pursuit of happiness and fulfilment, it's one of the most useful skills I know.
It's useful in a similar way as, for example, Yoga or Meditation is a useful skill.

Useful for drowning out the drudgery of modern society and downcast eyes of land-walking wankers

The moves you do on a surf board can also be translated to other sports as well, such as windsurfing, snowboarding and skateboarding as well.

Craig, any skill you possess which increases your physical stamina is a plus....most surfers are, coincidentally, very good athletes in general. So yes, surfing is useful (and very fun).
