The original Book of Mormon first edition was published in1830.

Can you provide me with a link to anything from that general time period (1830-1850), such as publications, articles, pamphlets, or anything else, that talks about the book of mormon?

Thanks!

@mormon_4_jesus - I'd like to know the general public's initial reaction to this book, when or around the time it was originally published. Reading the book will **not**give me that information, no matter how many times I read it.

@phrog - thanks, I tried googling what you suggested, as well as several other searches, and got nothing relevent to my question in the results. I guess the internet doesn't go back to 1830...lol

anyway thanks for all the answers so far!

I agree with Rac; yours is an unusual question, but a valid one. All I can recommend is what Rac suggests.

I do know that in those early years we Latter-day Saints were tagged with the nickname, "Mormon," out of derision because of the name of the book and its principle prophet within. Joseph Smith had elaborated in a letter to the "Times and Seasons" that the word Mormon meant "more good."

That works for me.

Good question but I don't have any answers for you. That is unusual. I generally have something to say. You stumped me. You might want to try lds.org or mormon.org. You can try The Encyclopedia of Mormonism or even wickipedia on The Book of Mormon. Try History of New York/1830. The internet has just about anything if you search enough options and variations.
Good luck

I liked your question, but not sure of what you were asking exactly. If you are interested in general Mormon history or specifically about the Book of Mormon edition of 1830.
However, my answer for either would be to look up www.lds.org and read about the church history info.

The Eight Witnesses were all members of the Whitmer or Smith families: Christian Whitmer, Jacob Whitmer, Peter Whitmer, Jr., John Whitmer, Hiram Page, Joseph Smith, Sr., Hyrum Smith, and Samuel Harrison Smith. Joseph Smith Sr. was Joseph's father, and Hyrum and Samuel H. Smith were his brothers. Christian, Jacob, Peter Jr. and John were David Whitmer's brothers, and Hiram Page was his brother-in-law - you could probably search any of them and find something....

you could also search the spalding papers, or uncle dave's for old articles - although they are both anti-mormon stuff, so you have to know that going in......

Why don't you read it yourself and make your own opinion about it?
