it just reminds me, yet again, how close I am to being them...
I give them whatever little I have... sometimes very little indeed...
I DO work for food, for whatever it is worth...
EDIT:"There are jobs for people who only know how to stand on a corner holding a sign."
I will supply my educational credentials to an impartial person here, if you have the testicular fortitude to put yours on the table next to mine. Was laid off after 23 years of service as I was too expensive, I was also too old to be useful. Am unemployable because of my age. I DO WORK EVERY DAY trying to make ends meet. What a cruel and offensive person you are. Why are ONE out of FOUR vets homeless ? yeah, I know, we are mentally defective. Read Mein Kampf, you will get a warm and fuzzy feeling. NO, I do not collect a PENNY in social assistance, will swallow a bullet before I do...
EDIT: hello, Annabella, I trust you are indeed well today... I wish you the best...

The signs here just say "No money for food/clothes"
I don't give them anything. Often they asking in front of the McDonalds sign that says HIRING.
I had a friend who worked in security in West Edmonton Mall. They have people begging for money there all the time. They were offered jobs all the time, plus a free meal with that job everyday, and they refused. If they aren't willing to work for their meal, why should I just give it to them?
In my City (Edmonton) a person may have a reason to be homeless, but no reason to not have a job. Tim Hortons pays $12 an hour.

I have done both. Many use this tactic as a living and they probably make more from begging than they would a real job. Others are really down on their luck and don't have a job or any other type of income. It's hard to tell the real needy most of the time so if you stop to help, just remember that your good deed is done in good faith, but the receiver could really be a deceiver.

I can't wait till I am a full grown adult & have a job.
Thats when I'll take some deserving Homeless Bum off the street, & invite him over my place for a hot shower.
I'll also give him some fitting cloths I no longer need anymore & a hot plate of food.
Thats when I'll ask him to return the favor, by being my personal Bodyguard.
You'd be suprised how many homeless men own guns/knives.
And I'm sure they aint just for messin.
They could probably jack some people up.
Thats what makes having your own personal, Bum Bodyguard so cool.

I did the experiment once. I offered $40 for four hours of yard work. I was declined with no effort at negotiation. It would have been a pay reduction with work required.
I give to the Food Bank, not people on the street. My donation is far in excess of what I would give if I gave everyone $1.

It really depends on the person....
I have in the past hired a man to work for me who was holding a sign like that ... and work he did ..he was a hard worker too... I paid him and feed him... and there were no regrets.
But then there have been those cases where..someone was holding a sign...and I would tell them I had a job for them... Didn't get the reaction expected.... they would say no that's alright.. guess they didn't mean it...

I admit that I am skeptical when I see such signs. I have had first hand accounts of such people accepting food and then throwing it away as soon as the giver was out of sight.
I usually pass them by.
I donate in excess of 11% to my church with 1% going specifically to the welfare program. I know that the donation goes to helping those in need. I am able to trust that my efforts on behalf of the poor are going where they are needed.

Well what would Jesus do? would he pretend not to notice?would he stop and offer assistance? would he say a prayer? would he put 100 bucks in his or her pocket no questions asked? Its a dog eat world out there and the homelessness will only suffer more and more judging by the universal response to a stranger in trouble.

About a month ago, someone I know went to Wal-Mart's deli to buy some fried chicken (it's really not bad, actually). For reasons she couldn't understand, she bought two bags of chicken instead of one and two containers of macaroni salad, when she knew they would only eat one. Her daughter looked at her quizzically, (I guess she thought her mom was pre-menstrual, LOL) but didn't say anything.
She drove out of the parking lot and on a corner, saw a man and a pregnant woman standing there with a sign that said "traveling and hungry ... any help appreciated." She pulled up beside them and, without a word, handed a bag of chicken and a container of macaroni salad to them. They thanked her, but she told them it was from God and not from her; she is much too selfish to have thought of this on her own. So HER first thought would have been to drive on by; but GOD'S thought was, "help them just as I have helped you."

First thought is how can I help him ...
Second thought.... how is it we allowed America to become so bad that we ignore our own fellow men?
To those who think they are doing it for money, booze or drugs. Can't wait till you hit rock bottom some day and walk the same shoes. Then maybe you will feel compassion for your fellow man.
