This question can't be answered in 25 words or less. The science of linguistics studies the origin of languages. There are many theories and they're all very complicated. The most common theory is that people first imitated the sounds of the animals, like the animals' warning and mating sounds and then language developed from there. But this is just the tip of the iceberg; thousands of books have been written on this subject.

My granddaughter asked me this very question this morning. Mt answer was simple. It all started with cavemen and them grunting at each other. It evolved from there. Along the way people invented words as needed. Similar to Lewis and Clark naming trees and animals. The I told her it was a really good question and to ask her teacher what she thought about it. Hopefully the classroom will discuss this subject.

How do we use language? We use it to express ourselves through speech, to record our experiences or to invent and tell stories in writing. But before all that begins, before a word leaves our lips or a pen hits the page, we use language in our heads. This code we share is more than a “simple naming process.” It’s the means by which we form our thoughts and interpret the world around us.
One of the first people to articulate this concept was a Swiss linguist named Ferdinand de Saussure. Saussure wrote and taught in the late 1800s, and though he died in 1913, he remains one of our heroes here at Dictionary.com. Saussure understood that thinking about language was essentially thinking about thinking. He put language under his own theoretical microscope the way biologists study cells, looking at words as the building blocks of our thoughts.
The foundation of his project is breaking down our idea of a word into its component parts: the concept and the sound-image. Let’s do an experiment. First, picture a tree. It can be a tree you’ve climbed or a generic tree you’ve invented in your head. Regardless of the exact form, this abstract idea of a tree is a concept. Now picture the letters T-R-E-E. These four letters, when placed in this order, form the sound-image in that they can be spoken, written, or read. But without the imagined tree behind them, the letters are meaningless. Only by uniting concept and sound-image will “tree” evoke the mental picture you just conjured.
Saussure does not call this fusion of concept and sound-image a word, instead he calls it a sign, and it was through this code of signs that he built the discipline that’s given us so many tools to know our language: semiology. In Saussure’s words semiology is “a science that studies the life of signs within society,” named for the Greek word semeion, meaning “sign.”
In his book A Course in General Linguistics (the ground-breaking tome that this is coming from), Saussure replaces the term “concept” with “signified” (referring to that which is signified, i.e. the image of the tree) and “sound-image” with “signifier” (that which does the signifying, i.e. the written/spoken “tree”).
From there he drops a bomb that puts a new spin on the whole business: the signifier (written/spoken sound-image) is arbitrary. That’s right, according to Saussure the only function of the word “tree” is to be different from every other word. For all he cares it could be “blarg” as long as every speaker of a language recognizes that “blarg” signifies a leafy wooded plant.
Saussure points to the fact that onomatopoeias for the same sound vary greatly from language to language, and speakers are often conditioned by their language to perceive certain sounds as beautiful. (What words do English speakers find beautiful?)
This is the first in a series of three posts on the strange and wonderful world of semiology and Ferdinand de Saussure. We’ll tell a tale of love, loss, and forgiveness as we take Saussure’s “science of signs” into the real world.

LOl, no I've never really thought about that until now! I *have* thought about what makes a swear word a swear word though? What's the difference between damn and darn? And what makes a word so bad? But imagining who actually came up with that stuff makes me laugh. xD

The Oxford English Dictionary is a pretty damn comprehensive dictionary, which includes the etymologies(origins) of words too. The English language is an Anglo-Frisian language, and you can find pretty much where every word was first used (in writing) in the OED.

Archaeologists thinks that first words already were used about 2 million years ago. Homo Habilis were our ancestors which had already developed Broca's area in the brains which neurologically affect vocal tract musculature and let them pronounce words.

LOl. The answer is Jehovah invented words and languages.
explanation: Jehovah gave the knowledge to Adam and Eve, all the languages spoken in the universe and the first language spoken was old English. God said old English is the oldest language then amharic, and everything else followed. God said it is the loop of the old English in the bible that has has the plants of life not the new wording they are modifying the bible with. calling it the new international version and all kind of other version etc.LOl. making it now the non book of life. The new version no longer tell you how to turn the darkness into light. They even change the words for the bible after the year 2000.God said he is going to punish them all.especially those that charge taxes. He does not want an modernization of his words. because it will loose people in life and loose the first language. it is population control they are doing. God said say war stop fighting your distant brothers.. They don't want everyone to find the plants and a thing that give you ever lasting life in the fleshin the bible. The bible was really the book of life.it now be an ible instead of a bible. anyway Adam and eve where the first cave men after they left the garden of Eden. when the first cataclysm took place in... any way... Adam and his family was in caves.God said cavemen never grunted to talk to each other they spoke a language he taught them..According to god. God said he taught mankind old English first but taught them different languages when he separate men at the tower of babel, which reach as 49,822 ft in the air.( According to Jehovah), the building were made from lime stone brick and the shape of the base of the building was like a decagon,
the reason he broke it down after the flood is because they decided to build a gigantic tower as a symbol of their power, to make a name for themselves (Genesis 11:4). he said it was a man name Rooster Habakkuk who design the building and was the chief architect. of the building of the tower of babel. His father was an Arab and his mother was a Jew. His mother's name Ruth .Roster went to an drafting school of architecture where he learned how to build. He spoke Hebrew, old English,Amharic and Latin. if you want to know anything else buy my book. the stone in the building were with massive stone. 45 feet long ,25" thick 17 feet high weight 920 tons. these were the stone located at the base of the retaining walls. the stones in the middle were 600 lbs and the stone nearing the top were.....i can't tell you because it would defeat god' purpose of why the building was broken down to begin with. The people were trying to reach heaven God said if he had not broken it down they would have succeeded all the angels, god said it was Lucifer the fallen angel that shows rooster how to get to heaven in exchange for his soul. ..when you die and if you go to hell Lucifer destroys. God said one space shuttle that could have gotten there but he ripped apart the challenger before mankind realized it.... He said it's okay to go to the moon, one day you will intertwine with the wring being he also created after he created Adam. He was speaking about aliens from outer space... getting to close to him without authorization from him is not acceptable. God daid my space shuttle design can reach heaven successful. I saw one Romans are so bold they have the nerve to put up a video or make a movie that say god is dead t stop me from getting donations for the Jesus projects god ask me to complete like he asked Noah to build a boat...Jehovah is not dead neither is my ..... .I had to laugh when I saw that clip because if God was dead he won't be allowed to send the message he sent. God said id he dies every one in the universe will die too.. God come to visit me when he .........
