In general, people are more educated and they are simply getting smarter. Therefore they have begun to question all the hocus-pocus and fairy tales of religion. They have seen how the preachers preach hate from the pulpit because it keeps them in business. They have also seen how the preachers condemn things, then go ahead and do those things themselves. This is hypocrisy on a grand scale.

>Why are there some many Atheist now?
Well, since the start of the Enlightenment in the 17th and 18th centuries, people have been exposed to more and more logic and scientific information. Since the actual evidence we see in the real world tends to contradict the claims of religious texts, rational people recognized that the latter were likely to be false, and so they became atheists. In the meantime, most people, who were irrational and didn't like the idea of logic, remained religious and are now busy flying airplanes into buildings, trying to deny freedoms to homosexuals and generally causing damage to our society.
>I am not a religious person but I do believe in God and the supernatual.
Um...what? That's sort of like saying 'I'm not a girl, but I do have breasts and a vagina.' or 'I'm not japanese, but I do come from Japan.' It's a contradiction in terms.
>What do Atheist believe in, if they believe in anything?
The only thing atheists necessarily DON'T believe in is God (which in this case covers Buddha, Allah, Vishnu, Quetzalcoatl and the Flying Spaghetti Monster as well). Most atheists still believe in the world around them, things they can see with their own eyes, scientifically demonstrated facts, and even a code of morality. I think you're getting the word 'atheist' mixed up with the word 'nihilist'. Nihilists may often be atheists, but rather few atheists are nihilists. Sort of like how things you drive are often cars, but that doesn't mean that all cars have someone driving them.

In general, atheists believe you are responsible for cleaning up your own messes. They believe that things should be done because they are right, not because someone will hand you a prize. They believe that "good" is a matter of helping people, not pleasing an invisible superbeing. They believe that actual life is at least as precious as potential life. And they believe that if you're going to accomplish something, sooner is better than later.

1) Why are there some many Atheist now?
Because believers aren't allowed to kill them anymore.
2) What do Atheist believe in?
I believe in a lot of things. Just not supernatural beings for which there is no evidence for existence.

Atheism is when people don't believe in gods or deities.
i count myself as an atheist - i don't believe in god or organised religion but i do believe in the soul and an afterlife. i believe in karma and treating others how you would like to be treated.
i would say that there are now so many atheists because organised religions are no longer able to use fear to make people believe in gods. now that the fear has been removed, the lack of evidence of any deity is obvious and religion is questioned. simple faith is not enough for everyone and organised religion is too rigid to apply to our modern society.

Evolution. It works on the brain, too.
As for an atheist's beliefs. It's just the lack of belief in a deity. Everything else is fair game and depends on the person. Personally, I do not believe in anything supernatural, because there is no evidence to support it.

One reason is that our society as a whole is becoming better educated. I do not believe in anything. I have found that there is insufficient empirical evidence to support the hypothesis of a god or gods.

because any version of Christianity that relies on blind faith is doomed to lose the educated and intelligent.
One either becomes a non-Christian of one form or another that is more in tune with intelligent discourse, or one attempts to recreate Enlightenment-era Christianity in which learning and thinknig are valued, not feared. I would like to think I fall into the latter camp.

Atheism isn't a belief system, it is a label used to explain that we have no belief in god(s).
