I have a 2 pound chihuahua puppy who always seems to be hungry. We give him a half cup of purina puppy chow rationed out in 3 portions each day. However, that never seems to be enough becasue he is always licking his dish and begging for food. I dont want to overfeed him but I also want to make sure that I am not underfeeding him.

You need to switch to a high quality food for small dogs. Purina Puppy chow is mostly fillers (Crap, really...), which is why he's not satisfied.

Follow the feeding chart on the side of the bag - If it says 1 cup a day, then divide by 3 if you're feeding it 3x.

There is no single best food, but you can find lots of foods that are better than what you're currently feeding. Look at the ingredient list for any food that you're interested in. You want a food that's corn-free and has high quality meat sources (no meat by-products). There are lots of great brands out there, though some are harder to find than others. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo which is an excellent food. I'd also recommend Merrick, Wellness, Canidae, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Innova, and Timberwolf. Those are generally found in independent pet stores. Diarrhea isn't uncommon among puppies but it can be serious. Dehydration is very dangerous. If he hasn't already been to the vet for his shots, you should do so as soon as possible, as diarrhea is a symptom of the parvo virus.

Purian puppy chow is junk first of all. I reccomend feeding 0 cups of Purina and about 3/8 of a pound of Canidae all life stage formula.

The reason your feeding so much dog chow is because purina products have no nutritional value, therefor your dog needs more food to fill their needs.

say you give your dog some purina, i bet 70% will come back as poop. Only 30% was nutrients. I'lll lend you a shovel.

I use Innova. My puppy is about 9 weeks old...5 lbs. Right now, I feed him 1/3 cup ...3 times a day. Innova is a great food....and they give you the proportions on the bag...based on the weight of the dog, age, and the activity level....which is really helpful.

I have 3 chi's tea cup & 1 regular chihuahua and i've found that they usually stop eating when they are full. This pig like appetite will only last a few weeks and then you will find your pup pickey ... Don't ever start feeding your dog people food as it causes a problem with dog food forever
trust me

If he is still hungry, increase the ration by 1/2. If feeding 1 cup feed 1 1/2 cups.

It should say on the bag how much to feed him according to his weight. Puppies always act like they are STARVING, just feed him the normal amount. He are little pigs and will keep on eating if you let them.

chihuahuas can tend to over eat, if you haven't noticed the amazing population of overweight chi's. the amount of food your giving him is plenty. it might just be that your giving him the wrong type of food. if it has by products in it, then it just goes right thru them because they can not digest that. find a better quality food and you should find a better outcome. i feed my dog Nature's Variety
