Have there been any empires or governments put together without any recognized religion? Not like the United States, but some government that endorsed atheism?

Albania under Hoxha was the only country to ever have made atheism the official religion. Communist governments elsewhere discouraged it, but never banned religion, and never made any official exclusive endosement of atheism.

In the Democratic tradition, ever since the United States, governments are not formed around belief or disbelief in a supreme being. France is probably the most overtly secular state in the world, but its government doesn't take sides because in a Democracy, the government is for *all* people -- religious and irreligious.

In countries where the government is not for all people, you have it taking sides on religion. The Bush Administration takes the Evangelical side. In parts of Latin America, the Catholic Church rules. And in the former Soviet bloc, the government took the side of atheism.

Communists claimed to endorse Atheism, but then stemmed freedom because of a belief in the inherent evil of mankind.

So in reality Communists became a self propelled religion, where the state and people in power were Gods.

That is why Communism and religions tend to fail. They are based on incorrect assumptions about the human spirit.

I'm going to go on a vague guess here, and say China and the Soviet Union during the mid 20th century supported atheism, as they were communist and didn't want religion to conflict with them.

Today those countries (Russia and China) are free democratic states, and they no longer sponser or support any religion. But the majority of the population still happens to be atheist.

That would be the United States

As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.--- treaty of tripoli, 1796

None that I know of. On the other hand, the most atheistic nations in the world today enjoy low crime rates, murder rates, infant mortality, life expectancy while nations like america, which are very religious (maybe the most religious) have quite the opposite situation.

The places everyone names are not countries where atheism was endorsed by the government.

Communist ones.

Now there are majority atheist free countries now like Sweden and Japan. But in the free world the government doesn't and shouldn't endorse anything with respect to religion.
